Am distraught

We have just got back from a night away with friends – a very rare occurance for us as it’s difficult to leave the farm side. One of this years lambs has got out (lord knows how) and trashed the veg garden, it’s eaten the beans, gooseberry bushes, some of the broccoli and caulis, worse, its eaten all the roses and leaves on the entire place. The rose arch to the veg garden is ok above sheep height, but is stripped of leaves and blosson for the first 3 feet. All my other roses gone. I got a beautiful iceberg for my 50th – gone and another one from a friend which was a stunning apricot gone. Felicite and William Morris gone. I’m so upset I feel sick. Why do I bother and what is the point I ask myself.

aww jane what a shame and i can understand how you must feel, strange how it got out and wouldnt have thought it would eat so many things and so much, hope you can save some of your plants, hope things seem clearer when you have chance to calm down and think, keep your chin up jane x

Oh dear Jane, I am so sorry. No wonder you are so distraught. I would be too, but I expect a lot of it will regrow, and although you may have to wait a few weeks you will probably be surprised at how it will pick up. Try not to get too upset about it and look on the bright side. Things can only get better. Lol.

ooooooooo NO.... that is just not fair...... this is worse than me seeing a snake in the Pond this afternoon. I am going to let you in on a secret. I do not like going away for the very reasons that there are 2 deers which lurk about in the field and eventually come into my garden, since eating some of my plants I get worried about going away... they seem to control my social life a bit. :(

I'm sure they will recover Jane, you had a lovely break away with friends, just think of that.Animals are so unpredictable you couldn't have put in any more measures than you did. I'm sure you will check your fences now and hopefully it won't happen again, you can't stop having a social life or ,as you say what would be the point :)

Revenge, mint sauce springs to mind!!!!
But I'm sure after their good pruning your roses will grow back big and strong.

Thanks I hope so. The roses in pots have no leaves or blooms on at all. Just a few green stalks. There are a few leaves left on the bottoms of the bean stalks, they were up to the top of the wigwam, am hoping they will recover - eventually! All this years growth on goosegogs gone. It's just we were only gone for 24 hours and left garden in show condition ( well ok maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it was looking good) and to come back and find so much destruction is heartbreaking.
The fences are all good, this particular lamb was in a field we have never had one escape from but sheep, particularly horned ones can get out of anywhere. Anyway no use crying over spilt milk as they say. Does anyone know if the roses should recover at all? Jx

Thankyou all for your comments. Michaella I know just how you feel about leaving the garden. It almost feels as though they are just waiting for that moment when your back is turned and gobble gobble munch munch they have supper and you have no garden!! Don't think I'd have been overjoyed to find a snake in the pond either. Anyway, I have just about stopped sniffing and snivelling and feeling sorry for myself and will tackle garden tomorrow and try and get it back into some sort of shape. Jx

Jane your roses will recover and I'm sure they will be beautiful next year. Maybe this year a little garden shopping trip is needed to cheer yourself up. Plant something beautiful to look at :-)) A xx
Ps shout mint sauce out load everytime you pass the sheep, it will make you feel better!!

Sorry to hear about your garden. It must be very distressing for you. I hope you'll be able to get it back in shape over the summer.

Thanks Bloomer, I was gutted. I cried for ages, but that doesn't solve anything......................so just got on with tidying up today. I winced a few times though. I know on a world scale of things, my garden is neither here nor there, but as you say, so much work, effort and money! I can't afford to replace anything at the moment. so will have to look at chewed plants for a while. Am hoping roses won't die, but there are no leaves on them at all! Thanks for the kind thoughts though. Jx

Oh that's terrible Jane...you must have been devastated, little monkey! Hope it looks a bit better now...and hopefully some of your plants will only have had a good prune, not the veg though I bet....maybe a sculpture of 2 lamb chops positioned in the veg garden would make you grin next year at this time........X
