Gold in Greenwich

Had a great day out on Monday. Went with my brother and nieces to Greenwich to watch the olympic show jumping. My sister, who is part of Equestrian Team GB had got tickets for us, so I went down to Sheffield to meet up with my family and we went down by train early on Monday morning.
From the minute we arrived in london, we were part of a very well oiled machine. The organisation was superb and the facilities once we got there were absolutely awe inspiring. Initially, I was an ‘olympic sceptic’ and have to admit I thought good old Blighty would get it horribly wrong. Well I eat my words. Nothing could be faulted. Even the vast numbers of people didn’t cause the usual mayhem and I felt safe and looked after the whole time.
Well, We arrived in the arena and after meeting my sis (all dressed up in her olympic kit), we went up to our seats. Mark and Katie at one side of the stadium and Alex and I at the other! Lol. They were sat three rows back, we were high up on the scaffolding. I was a bit nervous at first, but with all the excitement, soon forgot (ish). Alex and I were sat with the equestrian team manager and the families of some of the riders, so that was quite exciting in itself. Particularly when one of our team jumped a clear round. I thought they were going to bring the stands down. It was impossible not to get caught up in the excitement and Alex and i jumped and cheered with the best of them. Apparently, even my normally reserved brother (he’s not like me)! jumped and cheered too. The actual jump off between Holland and us was thrilling and of course to watch whilst our riders took the gold medals and the National Anthem was sung was actually quite emotional.
Today is the dressage day, which is one of the main events for my sister as she is the main physio for all those horses. Apparently we stand a very good chance of gold – yesterdays show jumping gold was a bit out of the blue, for the team, as they hadn’t expected it.
Anyway here are some pics.

This is the security area. Everyone had to go through airport type security

Made from horse shoes! But Yorkshire had one first!!

I was in the stand to the left. Near the top!

The view of the course before it all kicked off.

The British team are jumping. You could hear the intake of breath from the crowd.

Yes, it’s still there.

Another team member comes in.

Clears the jump.

And cheers all round, we have the gold.

We went out for a meal afterwards. This is Victoria and the girls. She had to change out of her kit, as they were not allowed to go out and drink alcohol in uniform. Good old fashioned standards eh?

Had to add this stunning view, from my brothers house. Gorgeous isn’t it?

Hope you enjoyed the pictures and fingers crossed for another gold in the dressage.

How lucky are you Jane, that must have been awesome. Well done GB's equestrian team you all have done and are still doing a fantastic job. Those horses are so beautiful with such very skilled riders. I just love the whole set up, amazing. :O))))))

Hi Yorkshire and Olive thank you. No the dressage is a team event and Carl was the first rider out. We have 2 more riders to go out later and it is their combined score that count. his performance was outstanding though. I have actually been on to his yard (running errands for Victoria) and was invited for a cuppa and to watch him train. Fairly awe inspiring. Jx

Oh Jane how wonderful.....showjumping on tv as a child was what got me interested in horses.....60 years (my age) since we won gold with harry Llewellyn, remember all the showjumpers....harvey smith on harvester...and all the rest...., I know what you mean I truly didn't realise that the olympics would be like this.......simply amazing....

What a lovely day to remember

7 Aug, 2012

I can image being there and the atmosphere!! Glad you enjoyed it. My youngest brother lives in East London and had tickets to see the syncronised swimming. He told us all to look out for him when it was on the telly - he'd be waving a Union flag!! lol

7 Aug, 2012

Great blog Jane. I was watching on TV :-)

7 Aug, 2012

Smashing blog Jane. Team GB have done us proud. We saw quite a lot of the events on TV. It was very scary watching the horses on the cross country which made the show jumping look very civilised in comparison. Unfortuneately I have not seen the dressage but I may be able to watch it on i player. Its so exciting when a home sportsperson wins any medal but the audiences have been very supportive of the athletes from other countries too. It must have been thrilling to experience that first hand. Thank you for sharing.

7 Aug, 2012

What a fantastic day you had,Jane..and a great achievement to get two Gold medals...what a day it's been again today..wow,what a team GB...love all your pics..thanks so much for sharing it with us :o)x

I did watch the last of the dressage ...amazing ... the control... the thrilled looks on all their faces when they knew it was another gold ... wonderful! Your photos bring the occasion even closer, what an atmosphere there must be there and how wonderful for you to be part of it:-)
Oooh forgot to say I could be persuaded to swap views with your brother ...fabulous:-)

7 Aug, 2012

Glad you had such a great time, Jane. Amazing to have a sister so closely involved with everything. She's played her part in winning those medals! It's all been so thrilling.
The Peak District view is stunning. My eldest lives in Dore and we'll be down there on Saturday to bring home my youngest, who's been staying with him to do some work experience. We're planning a walk in the area, so hope the weather's fine. It's such a beautiful part of the country.

7 Aug, 2012

One word about your blog: Brilliant! I can feel the excitement coming over in waves. You aren't going to forget THAT day in a hurry.

7 Aug, 2012

Brilliant blog Jane. You did well to remember to take all those photos. It gives us all a little taste of your wonderful experience. Thanks for sharing, I would have loved to be there with you, but this is the next best thing.:-))))I think we are all feeling really proud of team GB, the medals just keep coming. Lets hope it continues.

7 Aug, 2012

Great day for you and for team GB, pleased to hear you were impressed with the way the event was organized, makes a change, so we can do it when we try!!
Loved the photographs, glad you had such a memorable day.

7 Aug, 2012

Glad to had a good day.........I don't like crowds either and hubby has bout us tickets for Lady Gaga for two nights!!

8 Aug, 2012

Stunning blog and pics you are a lucky girl and no wonder you got caught up in the excitement of the event........... don't want to jinx anything but GB does put on a good show whatever the occasion its what we are best at!!! :o)))

8 Aug, 2012

And 3.00 this afternoon individual medals......another edge of seat job I think.......

8 Aug, 2012

Just got in from work and read all your wonderful comments. Short of taking you all with me, it is nice to show you the day I had on GOY. Not seen TV today, but I gather no individual show jumping medals. Tomorrow (Thursday) is the individual dressage, so I am hoping we bag something there. Victoria (my sister) reckons we are in with an excellent chance.
Once again, many thanks for the lovely comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. Jxxx

Top marks to Vicky, Gold and Bronze what more could we have asked of the team. I loved what Laura and her horse did but I'm not a rider so can understand the judges are looking at technicalities. The music for the Gold was fantastic.

9 Aug, 2012

Just watched the dressage on the playback this evening, what a star, that horse and rider are something else, they were amazing, well done GB Equestrian team, great performance.

9 Aug, 2012

Yes I just watched it too. Saw my sister at the end hugging someone. I think she might be having a few drinky poos tonight. lol
As Niverdeen says, when we put our minds to it, GB is very very good at this sort of thing. Jx

9 Aug, 2012

Brilliant ... and that final scenery photo is fantastic :o)))

10 Aug, 2012

Just found this Jane...and I agree with Gatti...Brilliant!!
How wonderful to have been a part of it :)))

The International Jumping is just kicking off in Chalais this morning...fancy popping over to explain the scoring to me? x

10 Aug, 2012

Every time they knock something down its 4faults, then the course has to be completed in a set time......any time over that are time faults which are added to the score the person with the least faults wins......
Watching showjumping was a childhood passion, its hardly ever on tv these days

10 Aug, 2012

Thanks Pam! Maybe after these Olympics, it will be on telly more. It has really captured everyone's attention, hasn't it? :))

10 Aug, 2012

Yes it's a great result for the equestrian team, particularly when their funding depends on the results! Jx

10 Aug, 2012

Let's hope their funding (and all the other athletes) isn't affected by the next games being somewhere else, too.

They've all done so well...and there are lots of other young ones coming up, who need that financial support.

I'm completely hooked on the dressage now...and thinking about going back to lessons (not to compete in the Olympics, you understand lol!)! x

10 Aug, 2012

Go for it girl. They reckon Valegro is now worth a cool £10 million. Classed as the best dressage horse in the world. And he's only 10, which in dressage terms is very young. As far as I know, the funding is not affected by where the next Olympics are held. Think it's in Rio? But may be wrong. Jx

10 Aug, 2012

I know that when I was young, J, you had to live near a good athletics club...or you had no chance...unless your parents had the time and money to make your career the only thing in their lives. And, I think that Charlotte's mum had to do something quite similar.

But, I think that much more money has been poured in (I don't know about the equestrian events but some previously unfunded sports were suddenly backed again) because of the "home games"...

...and long may it continue because with proper support, aren't we just brilliant??!! :)))

I'll be on Fringle, by the way...he's 45 years old (human years) and just knows what to do...
...but he makes me look good! lol! xx

10 Aug, 2012

Fab and fab name too. 45 that's going it some. What a star. I miss Ramsden, my horse, terribly. He's back with my sister at the moment as I haven't been well enough to look after a horse (and work and garden) for a couple of years. Besides the asthma, I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which I manage well, most of the time, but when it's bad, am nearly bed ridden - oh and then there's the bowel op and hysterectomy - lol. I'm the healthiest unhealthy person you'll ever meet :o))) have a couple of ponies at the moment, but it's not quite the same...... Jx

10 Aug, 2012

Super blog & great pics Jane - I was in Greenwich park when they were building the equestrian fixtures and thought at the time how fab it would be to be there - lucky you!

I, too have CFS and can't ride much these days. You have to really pace yourself don't you. I wish 'Horse of The Year' was still on TV I used to be mesmorised watching it - How could you ever forget the famous intro music.

Yes, next Olympics is in Rio.

11 Aug, 2012

Oh, J...I think that you're doing pretty damned well, all things considered! x

My ideas of getting back on a horse are delusions, though, induced by watching these amazing horses on telly...because, at heart, I know now that I break things when I fall...

11 Aug, 2012

Hi Annelise, so nice to meet you. Lol Karen, me too, am afraid of breaking my teeth of all things. But I would ride Ramsden again if I could. 16hh full thoroughbred, ex race horse and eventer, but gentle as a baby (most of the time) We bonded, but not quite to dressage standard, more tootling round the countryside and going to the pub! He loved a bag of crisps and a glass of wine! Jx

11 Aug, 2012

Just the right name too, for a pub companion, J...
You must miss him loads...

I once nearly brought a beautiful mare home from Italy. We were on holiday in a villa owned by race-horse owners. Cabouchard's (named after her favourite perfume) paddock was at the end of the garden and she was like Ramsden...full of breeding and so gentle...and we bonded. But she wouldn't race and she didn't breed. They were desperate to get rid of her. I, so, wanted to give her a good life...but we just didn't have enough land. I don't actually like to think about what might have happened to her... x

11 Aug, 2012

Just tell yourself she will have found a wonderful home, with a doting owner.............Jx

11 Aug, 2012

Yup...I hope that's what happened...Kx

11 Aug, 2012

What a brill day to remember, i watched all the horse jumping etc and was so proud of the British team, i bet you are so proud of your sister, thanks for showing us your lovely photos of your day there, pleased you enjoyed it.

12 Aug, 2012

Thank you Clarice. Yes I am proud of her, the team and generally of the whole olympic thing. I think it has been fantastic and I'm sooo not into sport at all!
My youngest son is at the closing ceremony tonight. I do hope it goes off smoothly.Jx

12 Aug, 2012

I'm not into sport, but i did enjoy the horses and funny enough i enjoyed the bike races, and like you i'm so proud of everyone who took part, one of my grandaughters went done there on Thursday and coming back in the early hours tonight. x
