Hose pipe ban in Yorkshire.

Only joking lol. We have had a WHOLE afternoon of sun today, and so I am punch drunk (no not literally), demob happy and slightly mad kipperish. I thought I might pre empt the news headlines though, if this brief sunny appearence extends for another day or so!
Anyway, in a somewhat euphoric burst of enthusiasm, I took the camera into the garden to show you all around.
Starting at the front of the house
The front flower bed and Daisy the cat.
Most of this has fared surprisingly well. Some of the annuals have had it and I had to cut the soggy blossom off the new hydrangea. freesia’s have also more or less lost their blooms, but hopefully, they will come back next year. The alstroemera are happy. Can you just see the delphinium in the bottom of the top pic? Don’t know what’s happened there. Or more accurately, what has NOT happened.
This is diasica. I had to buy the planter, to keep Attila The Hen off the plants.
A mulberry bush. It is from the root stock of James I’s, tree. Hope he doesn’t miss it.
Round to the back, to the veg plot. It is actually very weedy, so if the dry spell continues, there are several hours of work there. The rampant green are the potatoes. Not dug any up yet, so don’t know how they have fared. The wall of green at the bottom of the plot are the raspberries, blackcurrants along the stone wall to the left. There are also gooseberries, but they are in the overgrown bit and you can’t see them really.
Mick transplanted a few iris last year. They must like this spot.Unfortunately, they flowered with the worst of the rain, so their show didn’t last long.
The pond is still a work in progress. But it is full of taddies.
This is really to show you how the geraniums have suffered, These were MASSIVE and full of flowers. All my geraniums have got rot.
This is along the back terrace wall. There should be more colour, but the nicotina and nemisia have been washed away. still I think it will look ok with a few days sun on it.
Following the back wall down on to the patio by the back door. The hanging plant is a blackberry. It has clung on through all the digging and walling, so I decided to let it stay. Loads of blossom and fruit on it. Down the steps is Rambling Rosie, waiting to be repotted, then a climbing geranium and finally a lot of daisies.
A nice sunny spot to drink your wine, well it’s my wine actually!
And finally, this is the view from the swingy seat thingy.
All has not been lost in the rain, but I hope we don’t get any more. The garden is not as it should be, the tubs should be overflowing with colour and the boarders should be packed, but I think it will look half decent, IF we get some settled weather. Oh and if we do, you know what’s next don’t you? Yeup, the hosepipe ban!

Thanks Sticki. It's taken us 5 years so far to create it. And there is still so much we want to do. Just lacking the money, time and energy! Jx

I love your garden, the way the steps come down in the first photo is lovely. You have achieved a lot and the stone is so complimentary to the house and the planting.

I like it all... but I really like your back wall, it's brilliant.

Have to agree, what a beautiful property and love the stonework!

Pitty about the geraniums and annuals. I hope you get some sunshine to help them recover.
Your vegetable patch is looking good :o)

Ah thank you. When I first moved in 6 years ago, it was in a right old state, Mick had been away from it for about 3 years and the tennent had let it and the house run down badly. We have put all the gardens, steps and paths in. The orchard was there, but that is about it. The veg plot was part of the field. I dug 17 tons of top soil in myself! Mick (and builders) have put the walls up. You can see from earlier photos how much the back door area has changed. We still have a lot to do, but as ever, it's the evil money thing that clips our wings. Luckily we had all the stone (apart from the paving stones round the back) lying around the place.
It does take an awful lot of work to keep looking half decent, as it keeps wanting to revert back to the wilderness. Good job we both like gardening eh? Also, the camera does bend the truth a bit. I just missed out the messy bits I didn't want you to see. lol!
Anyway thanks for your comments, much appreciated.
Oh and if anyone is ever thinking of visiting, you are more than welcome. Just PM me and let me know when! Jx

Wow Jane! That is looking lovely in the sunshine. I was discussing dry-stone walling with OH yesterday. The council are building a new cemetery here and it has a dry-stone wall all around it. Scott passes it every day and notes the progress. I think it would be a great skill to have and very satisfying. Anyway, I digress, I love your walls and your views of course and your house looks amazing. I know everything is sodden and flowers are moulding etc. but if we could have a few days of dry and sun I'm sure it would all come good.....perhaps not the tatties, but if yours are in a well-drained spot they will be ok don't you think? I hope so! :D

What an amazing garden. Love what your doing with it Jane. It all looks lovely around the house & so open to the fields around.
Hope you get many more days to sit in your swingy seat thingy but then if the weather turns good your prob be working in the garden :-)

Morning! I love your garden, the house, the stonework, the terrace, the garden furniture, the beautiful pots and the wonderful views.....Oh and the swingy seat, I have always wanted one of them. I am at work and just really Lolled at Attila the hen, quite embarrassing when everyone looks at you like you've gone mad. It's got to be worth buying a hen just to give it that name Lol ;O)))))xxxxxxxx

Aw thanks guys. I LOVE living here most of the time. It is a way of life, though, rather than a hobby. Because of the scale of it, it sort of becomes your life and it's very difficult to get away - not least cos a ruddy sheep is bound to get out and eat it all. On the other side, we can't actually afford to get away really, so no problemo! It can get a bit messy and muddy for well.... quite a lot of the year and the drive (rough track) up to the yard and the yard are a bit of a disgrace. BUT, all in good time. I keep telling myself Rome wasn't built in a day! Oh, must check my lottery ticket, could do with a few quid to re gravel and concrete the rough track. The heavy rain washed several hundred yards of hardcore down on to the road. It makes breaking interesting. lol
Anyway, thanks for your lovely comments, it does make all the work seem worthwhile. Jx

It's the rain Bilbo, it turns every thing green. lol Jx

Hey ho indeed. The only trouble is.............once it does dry up, I have a mountain of weeding etc to do. Yuk. Jx

You are doing stirling work there, Jane and it's all looking good despite the rain...and the rain...and the rain. What a view you have and, like everyone else, I love your stone wall. All my container plants are looking sorry for themselves but other things- like the roses- are making up for it. Like Daisy - she's lovely.

Lovely garden you have there, stunning views and love your curvy wall as well... fab.

Thank you Suzy. it's been sunny today too, but sadly i didn't have time to sit out in it :-(
12 Jul, 2012
We had bright sun and clear blue skies first thing this morning.. then it clouded over and non stop rain this afternoon and this evening!
12 Jul, 2012
Oh rain.........................again. I think I'm going rusty, never mind the garden. Jx

I managed 30mins in the garden after work yesterday which was just enough time to get everything out of the garage to start before the heavens opened and I had to quickly put it all away again. It was still hammering down when I woke up in the middle of the night. Grey and drizzle now......so bored with it all, there can't be much more left can there?x

Ah well Ba, it certainly comes with plenty of that. It's all got a bit on top of me this summer if I'm honest. I'm my own worst enemy though. I like everything to be perfect.................and nature never intended it that way, sigh..........!Jx
