following in family footsteps...

i am pleased as punch ,my son Colin has just got the alotment plot next to ours,it is in a poor shape as the girl who had it for 18 month before had not done anything on it ..she took it on with her pregnant sister then had an operation on her hand so decided to give it up..so 3 weeks ago Rodger from the commitee asked us if Colin still wanted a plot.YES PLEASE we said.my son has been a keen gardener for years now ,always changing the garden round and has made an ornamental pond with lots of fish .he has also grown a few vegetables but not much as the garden was more for my 2 grandaughters to play in,one aged 9 who is into growing plants already..so now he gets his chance to see what he can do to follow in my grandads shoes who never bought a piece of fruit or veg in his adult life.
starting the clearing up now..
will keep you posted on the progress..

I may be repeating myself here, Mum has an allotment behind her back garden, used to be my Dads pride and joy, he passed on 7 years ago and 2 different people have since taken it on, yet again, nobody is maintaining it, the Redcurrants, Gooseberries, Blackcurrants etc. are going to waste ! I admit to picking some Redcurrants and I know somebody is picking the Gooseberries ! I have phoned the local Council numerous times to explain, they just say it's rented out and there's nothing they can do ! Frustrates me so much, especially when I've had to hack down the tall grass, weeds and nettles which are trying to creep into Mums garden ! The waiting list is a long one down here too, just doesn't make any sense that a person can pay just £7.50 per year and be allowed to neglect it. Sorry for the rant.

I'm sure everyone is 100% behind you as you fume. It is not right that anyone should be allowed to do this. I am surprised that there is not an allotment committee who could sort this out. All the allotments I know, are run by committees and they have to adhere to very strict guidelines as regards hut design, burning rubbish etc etc. I think these are set by the council. There are new allotments near us, offered by a Garden Centre. It is asking £200 + a year to have one of their allotments. Joanella I sympathise with the problem of having your peace disturbed by family members but they probably realise that that is why allotments are so sacred and may be concerned that you will be over willing to give advice. Who says the problems go away when they get married. Fortunately the silver lining is there too.

hi Shirley did not know about your dads being next to your mums garden it must have been great for him at the time,i also understand how upsetting it must be to you to see it getting overgrown, ours is not council but self governed and if left untended for so long a letter is sent out ..i think they get 3 strikes..unless there is illness of course but i dont think they stick to it as some on our site are overgrown..and you are entitled to a rant now and again
Scotsgran, you are right about committees and also the rules you talked about ,£200 thats a joke, ours are £20 per plot +£5 admin fee per year..i know i am going to be careful and try not to give too much advice..mind you i still need some myself lol..
cheers Cristina, hes young & healthy and loves being outdoors so he will enjoy all the digging etc ..till the next morning anyway..

A couple of weeks ago I put my name down for an allotment even though I'm working with Gerry. He has confided to me that he had thought of giving up his half allotment & just keeping the whole one.
The main one is the one with the apple tree & the fruit bushes I've talked about in my blogs. In the half allotment the only permanent thing was the Buddleja until I planted the raspberries there. Which reminds me he planted two fig trees there last year as well.
I said I would like an allotment on the field where we are now but that doesn't mean Gerry's half plot will be offered to me. There's bound to be somebody else on the list ahead of me who it would be offered to if he decided to leave it. In the meantime I can get in some experience & Gerry will benefit from my help. So we're both happy!

hi David and thank you ,little Charlotte already has her own tools and been pulling weeds up..;o)
Balcony, you never know a man on ours has a lady who shares with him and she is on more & more.. he is on less & less if he gives it up i am sure it will go to her ..is there no way you could put your name on it with Gerry as a joint plot ?.
thank you Fluff,i will pass on all your wishes to him .:o))

"..is there no way you could put your name on it with Gerry as a joint plot ?. "
I'm afraid not. Gerry told me that they will only offer plots to people on the basis of their position on the waiting list.

that is a shame, puts you off doing things you want to do then if they can just take it off you ,still it helps to keep us busy look forward to your update :o)
