Love your step by step recipe, and your captions made me smile also. Brilliant idea to use the polystyrene cups and cut them away when set. Have the birds enjoyed them? Pam

Since I've lived here I haven't seen many birds at all :o(
Maybe there are not many about.
2 Feb, 2010
a few people have said that, maybe they are fed up of our weather too..:o)
2 Feb, 2010
But I have lived here 4 yrs and hardly any birds at all. Only Jack Daws and a few sparrows. And an occasional Bluetit. Nothing else. :o( I had so many different ones in the old garden. I'm hoping as my garden develops and the shrubs etc grow bigger I will get more, like in the old place.

it is pouring down here now hywel, i just looked out of kitchen window & counted 10 , blackbirds, sparrows, robins, a couple of finches and pigeons it just shows you..do you have many trees around,as you say as your garden grows it may attract more,or maybe just that your neighbours keep them well fed so they stay in theirs,,o)

We've had a morning of heavy rain too, and I've felt better than I have done for many weeks lol
Where I lived previously there were lots of woods, but here the only trees are round the edges of fields. Maybe that's why there are so few birds. I am hoping they may come when my new shrubs grow a bit.
I'm glad you had a few in your garden today :o)

It wouldn't be because of a very pretty four legged female by any chance Hywel ?! :~)))
2 Feb, 2010
Maybe so lol. Although she hardly went out at all in that cold weather, but I saw hardly any birds.
2 Feb, 2010
glad to hear you are feeling better hywel, birds may be sticking to trees round fields, can you see trees from your upstairs windows?it may be worth watching out for a while to see if there are any about...
lol skillen...:o)

There are fields behind the house, and all around really. But no woods. There must be some birds about. I am hoping they'll come into the garden when things grow bigger.

Another nice bird blog I get quite a variety in my garden I do have trees and shrubs but my garden is cat friendly as well. The birds do seem to have the cats sussed out though, the magpies can certainly sort the cats out.At the moment I dont have seed for the birds so they are enjoying my lardy cakes and food scraps.
5 Feb, 2010
hi mavis, thank you,lol the magpies sorting the cats out i can imagine ,i have magpies too and i bet they are enjoying your lardy cakes...

I have to put my bird cakes in wire cages or the squirrels just gnaw through the strings and run away with them - lost more coconut halves and small terracota pots than I care to remember! They have now learned how to unhook one side of the cage and I don't suppose it will be long before they get the other side undone and I am left with just the handle.
I hang my bird cakes in the trees so I don't put the seeds in any more - they tend to sprout and I get all sorts growing underneath. I usually find enough fruit and scraps around the pantry, with some peanuts, cheese, bacon and stale bread to keep them happy though. Got a black cap that's a regular visitor and a beautiful thrush who has worked out that the starlings throw out more than they need and she sits in the pot of heather underneath the feeder on the edge of the deck and cleans up the debris.

hi wend,i too was fed up with the squirrels they took every thing i put out,i dont know if you spotted the blue thing on my bird stand but it is actually an upside down plastic salad bowl from the £1 shop & the best buy i ever had,put a hole in it and slid it on pole absolutely squirrel proof ,they tried for ages every way they could but not been back for about 2 month now so £1 well spent..you could use the stale of a brush with some nails in it to hang nets on i dont know if that would help, lol your thrush they are not daft are they :o)

That bowl thingies clever, Joanella. Thanks for the tip and the photo - I would have put it on the pole above the feeders - Tee Hee.
