raised border walls

what should i build with? i was going to go with wood, layered planks with 2×2 stakes in the corners making them about two foot high with space at the top to add more planks if it needed to be deeper in the furture depending on what i’m going to grow, as i want to grow flowers and veg in all the borders.
but i would have to buy wood as i cannot get hold of nearly enough, it doesn’t really fit with my make do and mend theory for gardening.
sooooooooooooooooo……..
my family business is a karting track (in southbank m’boro) we have to try and find homes for hundreds of tyres every week and were running out of space rapidly as we can’t throw them away.
so what if…. i build my raised beds out of them, people build houses from car tyres and these are kart tyres so are about as big as bricks(but round).
also to stack them to build a wall you have to fill them with earth so you can plant in the walls, through the walls and add more at any time.
given time trailing plants like geraniums, strawberries that spread would cover the tyres making them invisable most of the year, and with special paint you can paint them.
but they will be there for erver, is that good recycling?
plus think this is a good idea you can try it for free i give you tyres by the car full. lol

I think its a brill idea Kat. I am also on the look out for raised bed material and have been searching (on Ebay etc.) for scaffold planks. I think your tyre idea is excellent plus (if you don't mind the black tyres on show) they warm up in the sunshine and radiate that heat back towards the plants at night.

certainly differant kat, not sure i would want tyres on show, ive got 4 wheels my hubby is getting rid of and thats enough to look at :o) good luck with that one

Hi San, you could stack the four tyres (minus the wheels) and paint it a nice colour, fill with soil and then plant into it. I have seen it done and it looks nice (to my untrained eye. Lol)

ummm sounds ok, will discuss it with bazza lol you ok today ian :o)

May sound like a good Idea - just hope you dont want to move house anytime soon the new people might not feel the same? If you have to dump hundreds of tyres every week surely you need a permit? Quite near Sevenoaks a tyre dumping site burned for some years it was quite famous on the A21.

We're fine thanks, how's the tummy? (that doesn't sound right but I've had my night time meds and am on my way to bed, so its the best I can manage!) Lol. :~))

Thats sounds brilliant Kat re-cycling tyres that way saves on the environment for sure, but another way is to have them shredded, (Ian where's yer shredder?) and use them for childrens play area's.

Hi Kat, I have sent you a private message re: your tyre offer! ;~))
23 Sep, 2009
Thats very reassuring Bobq and sounds like a great solution - materials cannot be harmful if they can be safely used for childrens play areas. Would have to be a tough shredder though as Kat says he has to get rid of hundreds a week.

Great recycling, but I'm not too sure that I'd like looking at them....you'll have to be sure that YOU will before you build the beds!

I agree Spritz but if I do then they will be in the back (veggie) garden and not on show. I will have to travel 220 - 230 miles (round trip) so I am going to be absolutely sure before setting off! ! !

They always 'repeat' on me Bob. Lol ;~))))))

i'm hoping that if i plant trailing plants all round the edges they'll cover the tyres. it'll be like having a riased bed with edges made from pots.
24 Sep, 2009
True - I'm sure it'll be fine - just not for me, I'm afraid! Sooorrrryyyyyyyyy.....................
Ian - do you HAVE to keep repeating yourself like a parrot?? Tsk, tsk!! LOL.

I don't know what happened Spritz, so I blamed the cucumber. Lol ;~))

Not so much "recycling" but "re-using", Kat. I think this is a great idea, and resourceful, too. Schools around here use tyres - often large tractor ones - as planters for flowers, fruit and veggies. Have also seen instances of tyres cut in half and used to make semi-circular wall/fence "troughs", with trailing and upright planting. You could have tyre planters all over the place at your karting track - very apt, and decorative, too.

i would just like to say we don't dump the tyres as that is ilegal and we would have to pay to have them taken away, so we use them to build walls with. even middlesbrough your not allow to burn tyres any more.
you would think that we would have lots of planter made of tyres but we have wooded ones full of dead plants due to lack of drainage. if my meds are sucessful i might instate some over there.
