Stork on the chimney

My Goodness. We never had storks in the village I have lived since childhood. Just wild ducks, falcons and herons in the winter.
Today in the evening my neigbour informed me I had stork on my chimney. I thought he joked, but – it was there!!!
I do not know if that strong wind which was yesterday all over Slovakia wounded or exhausted this lovely bird, but we will be wiser tommorrow. If it is still there, I will make a photo and share it with you.
My God! Stork on our chimney.
What a great day!

Sheilar thats exactly what I thought, lol...

Aren't they supposed to bring incredibly good luck? Hope so, K!

Hi, Sheilar! For those ladies who want get pregnant, I will rent the house, lol.
Unfortunately, today in the morning I found just chimney on the roof.
Actually we have the same folk saying. It originates from Greece, where stork was associated with the birth of Hera, goddess protecting women (Am I right, Gattina?). It is said, that the house on which storks made their nest, will have good and happy family life.

I'm not sure, K., It sounds pretty much the same sort of thing that I've heard. Maybe Costas will know.

Good luck, Katarina, with getting photos of the Stork.

My dentist is a lovely Greek lady... very nice ... I could ask her about Greek folklore, storks etc.

18 Dec, 2011

Wow what a treat Kat...I expect he got blown of course, or was exhausted, battling the winds, anyway, good luck should follow you, if the legend is for true...:))))

What an unusual sight it must have been. I wonder if he'll come again.

Ah...There are three differing versions of the Hera/Stork myth that I know of Katarina..

1: Gerana was a most beautiful woman, queen of a pygmy tribe. She despised the gods especially Hera and Artemis. Hera was not to be messed with so she turned Gerana into a Stork, Gerana's only thoughts were for her new baby and she tried to snatch him up and fly away with him...The Pygmy people chased her away..........

So rather than delivering babies storks were associated with stealing them.

2: This one I find interesting because it is a little like the Medusa myth. Antigone was Priam's beautiful sister and of all her assets it was her lustrous long hair that she was most proud of. She would often brush and tend it and brag that it was more beautiful than Hera's own hair.....Hera was not to be messed with so she turned Antigone's tresses into snakes..(Medusa)...Much later on another less powerful god took pity on Antigone, who no man would look at, turned her into a Stork....that is why storks kill snakes...

3: Hera is depicted as the goddess of breastfeeding mothers....all tied up with the Hercules myth, sends a stork to watch over the nursing baby...both Hercules and storks are associated with killing snakes.

I am just missing CostasĀ“ democratic point of view on the stork story.

18 Dec, 2011

Katarina..you know about Hera and how our galaxy the "milky way" is made from her breast milk..........and that where-ever a drop of it lands on the earth a Lily grows ?

18 Dec, 2011

Noooo. Tell me!

18 Dec, 2011

I thought lilly, at least the white one, is connected with Virgin Mary.

18 Dec, 2011

Pimpernel the story teller strikes again....

I can't tell a story unless everyone is sitting comfortably, and Stickitoffee is in the room.

18 Dec, 2011

OK, lol.

18 Dec, 2011

By the way, Pimpernel, does your name mean something? Is it a flower?

18 Dec, 2011

OK, so while we will wait until all people find their orthopedic cushions and chairs, I will tell you, that today I saw another stork - or was it the same? - about 30 kilometres from my village. Flying to the northeast. It flew quite low, I had camera with me, but it was too dark. I hope, it will arrive home safely.

18 Dec, 2011

I would think it will be the same Stork Katarina trying to find his / her way home, I too hope she makes it safely. Nice to think that your rooftop was a welcome resting place...:0))

Katarina, Scarlet pimpernels are dear little red flowers that grow by the wayside. There's also the famous book by Baroness Orczy about an English nobleman in the time of the French revolution who helped aristocrats to escape the Guillotine, and he was known as "The Scarlet Pimpernel". So you take your choice - little flower or spy!
He's absolutely right about the Milky Way (Via Galactica) supposedly originating from the breast of Hera, but I haven't heard about the lily bit.

18 Dec, 2011

OK. I thought it is some latin name. At the University we had a teacher of pharmacology, she taught botanics part of pharmacology. She was very fragile, had 40 kilos (altogether with coat on her), very childish voice and pale skin. We called her Pimpinela. Sorry, I do not know the English translation of this herb.

Sorry I'm late!
Would love to hear the story, fascinating so far, didn't know any of it. I have seen storks making a nest on the top of the chimney at the sherry making distillery? In Spain.

Sorry again to keep you waiting, I'm sitting comfortably now...

19 Dec, 2011

Cushions plumped, and bum sat...:))) I'm ready

19 Dec, 2011

All Agog!

19 Dec, 2011

Ladies, sorry, I went asleep yesterday. But today in the morning the stork was again on the electricity pillar situated in front of our house, excercisig a bird tai-chi, lol. I made a photo, will send it to you in the evening. Lol. Looks like marabu.

19 Dec, 2011

its very exciting kararina! perhaps he has come to stay for christmas??

19 Dec, 2011

I hope so. Today in the morning as we watched him, he bended head to us and observed us too. Actually close to electricity pillar there is huge Christmas light decoration, so maybe he liked it. He is evidently more municipal stork then villager.

21 Dec, 2011

Pimeprnel probably went for massage and is pampering himself :)
Today in the morning I saw a huge school of wild gooses flying to the west. I thought the winter is over.

22 Dec, 2011

Is that what happens at the end of the winter? they go west?

it is just possible pimpernel is either carving a pumpkin or writing a pantomine on the other hand he may be doing something completely different!!??

22 Dec, 2011

Or juggling all of the above and more! The story is coming along..Just need a few more pictures, for some reason my mobile phone has decided NOT to connect to the computer, most disagreeable. then just waiting for a lily to bloom in the vase...I will put up a photo of my stork on the roof to show I have not forgot..

22 Dec, 2011

22 Dec, 2011
