Well potatoes seem to have taken over my garden. They are sprouting up everywhere. The growing bags are full to overflowing with foliage. Many different shades of green. Some are flowering with purple flowers like deadly nightshade, but my concern is that all the activity maybe on top because surely the overall weight of the bag plus contents should increase if there are lots of new potatoes to harvest? I remain a doubter that even I ,could pull of an event that yields a crop. What if there is nothing under the leaves? I have planted potatoes in plastic bins, tubs, raised beds and directly in the soil itself and am absolutely convinced that nothing will come of any of it, such has been my experience in years past. My raised beds are toilets for the dogs but a few odd seedlings ,salad leaves ,and flower and veg alike struggle with the squirrels. Broad beans next to carrots and strawberry plants. What the heck Its fun .How are you other potato growers doin?

I think you will find the border will win hands down as there is so much more root space. An interesting thing is that potatoes only grow above the seed potato not on the roots which go down from it.

I have potatoes in tubs and they have put on a lot of growth this week. I'm hoping that means they'll have lots of potatoes. I hope you have lots too :o)

How interesting to find out that the new potatoes grow above the seed potato. In that case I am expecting nil points as the EUROPEAN SONG CONTEST ENTRY WOULD GO. However I am assured that miracles DO happen. Now who do we sue if the bags are empty? Ha !ha!

Until you dig them up there is no way of finding out is the trial is a success or failure. I am also growing in growbags this year and feeling very doubtful if they are putting any potatoes on the roots. It seems too good to be true that you can actually grow potatoes just under the soil in a bag barely 6" deep when you pummel them up. I have been very successfull in growing in pots in the past and have a lot of them this year. I had a dig around in one pot of Colleen an Irish bred early which is reputed to go from seed to table ready in 7 weeks. I doubt it. There doesn't seem to be anything there at all. I have lots of foliage see my blog photos. It is nice to have someone to compare notes with.
