Autumn Mists.

Now today it’s autumnal !
Throughout the night it’s been raining steadily and still is now.
Decent rain too – steady, heavy – but not damaging, rain :-)))))
Even the driest parts of this dry garden are nicely soaked now and i’m chuffed to bits !

I was trying to think back to when last we had this kind of decent rain and i think it was in August, i know we’ve not had this kind of rain for over 5 weeks now.
This garden has to be watered every other day in dry spells if new planting’s been done and dragging the hose around gets tedious.

Looking across to the road to the woods this morning there’s a mist shrouding the trees and houses and it actually looks like an autumn or winters day, there’s one thing that doesn’t tie-in though …. the temperature’s 16 degrees out there … very warm, very still and very humid !

The trees over there won’t be completely naked until November, so a few more weeks yet before i look across and see bare branches and then when the mists come, it looks lovely seeing ‘arms’ and ‘fingers’ of branches poking out from the mists !
(I just went to take some pictures of the woods from the back windows here but …. the cameras battery was flat, grrrrr).

So, for now, with no pictures to show you, that’s it !
A warm, grey misty morning that looks like autumn …
…. thank goodness i cut the grass in the front yesterday,
….. widened the ribbon borders that flank the front path,
….. shifted a few plants from a different area into those borders
….. and improved the soil there too
….. returfed a small area close by
… and all in just over 3 hours !!! ….
This rain is so very welcomed and just perfectly timed !
:-))))))

Well done Louise on getting all that sorted in time for the rain.
I was pleased to see it when I looked out of my bedroom window 1st thing. Could see the mist on the Welsh hills, now can't see the hills so there is more rain on its way.
Will miss that when I move into town

It's been raining all night and most the morning too here in Manchester (what's new I hear you cry) but hold on.... its just stopped and the sun is pushing through. Huh that wont last long :o))))

Shrouded in mist - that's what I woke up to this morning, Louise. And thank heavens for the rain - it makes me feel gloomy, but this is the first rain here for over 4 weeks, and we'd only had one day with 4 previous weeks bone dry too. Been waiting for this to plant that Gingko biloba after moving a Photinia - earmarked for Thursday, when the rain should have stopped.

Here's to Thursday, Bamboo :-))

Isnt it great louise when you do something in the garden and then it rains properly. Been so dry here and then 36 hours ago the rain really started. but still very mild no heating on yet.

6 Oct, 2009

We were desperate for rain here, although it messed my day up it was wonderful. Still there was always GOY.

6 Oct, 2009

Thank heavens, Docbob, something to do in the wet that's garden related, at least

6 Oct, 2009

Yes, Louise, we have rain here today as well(thank goodness). But still not enough. It rained(or drizzled) all day yesterday and on and off ( some heavy) today , but still the ground is solid. My front lawn is begginning to green up in places!
I can sympathise on the hose pipe front. It does get a bit wearing every day after work and i'm afraid my garden hasn't had anything like enough attention this year. It's a very windy spot here so that dries everything ut even more and does damage to my lovely Dahlias and other taller plants!

Well done Louise shame about camera but no matter you have described it so well one can picture it anyway, its a mixed day here and pleased to say we have had a drop of rain but as you say its really warm,if we don,t get anymore its hosepipe again, got to top up the pond and waterbutts so no probs,there.lol....

6 Oct, 2009

It's rained on and off all day now and everything is nicely soaked :-)))))

Paul, we get winds here too so everything dries up far too quickly, it's a losing battle :-(

Neighbours always tease me about the amount of watering i do, i used to explain and show them the bone dry earth all around them.
Now i just smile and wave ... it's useless :-/

They're probably on a water meter and jealous Louise!!!

6 Oct, 2009

We've had plenty of rain up northwest this summer, only september that was dry, infact my water butts have never been empty all summer.

6 Oct, 2009

Bet you're glad you got all that done just in time. Seems like we're all glad to see the rain today, I know I am. The rain must be the reason that GoY's so much busier than usual this daytime!

6 Oct, 2009

LOL, i thought the same Lily :-)))

It beats Deal or No Deal!!!!

6 Oct, 2009

Oh god, no contest ;)

6 Oct, 2009

It's even keeping me from 'Strictly' on Saturdays and that's UNHEARD of!!

6 Oct, 2009

LOL :-)

Perhaps Brucie ought to join GOY. He might get a bit more current!!! (unlike his jokes) I used to think he was the greatest but I'm afraid I can't watch him now. He, like everyone goes past their sell by date and his jokes and lines certainly have. Shame. He was tremendous through the 60's and 70's!

6 Oct, 2009

I don't think so Paul' we'd have to put up with his 'jokes' on here too. He's the one that should go! I watch it in spite of him, not because of (does anyone?)

6 Oct, 2009

Ahh, Louise you are so poetic!

Hear Hear Lily.

It must be wonderful to see the trees and the mist. I lived on the edge of a wood once and remember how eery it can look.
Do you hear the wind moaning in the trees at night , and the branches groaning in the wind. I did. It's creepy... lol

6 Oct, 2009

I lived somewhere that the garden backed onto a wood - terrified the whole time I lived there, only six months, glad to move, very, very eerie indeed - strange noises and rustlings all the time, and not in a good way...

6 Oct, 2009

Hywel, i don't hear that - thank goodness because i'm across the road from it.

Bamboo, i have a friend who lives in 'exactly' that situation.
Her house has a low stone wall (about 3' high) that divides her back garden from the dense woods.
There is NO WAY i could live there either !
No siree !

6 Oct, 2009

Same here Louise everything is soaked nicely I've also been watering every other day. Hopefully the lawn will come back green once again, I should be use to it as it does it every year, being in the front and facing south it doesn't take long to dry out and get scorched. What a blow about the camera so annoying when that happens.
I drove home this afternoon from a friends house and came through thick mist over the hill and yes it was very eerie.

6 Oct, 2009

There was a boy in the village where I lived many years ago and he was killed by the local butcher. They found his body up in the branches of one of the trees in the wood. I used to think it was him crying when I heard the howling of the wind and groaning of the branches... lol... It was eery but it didn't frighten me. I was nice and cosy inside the house. :o)

6 Oct, 2009

Crikey Hywel, you've just terrified me :-/
Is that a true story ? It's not halloween yet is it ?? !!!

6 Oct, 2009

Good old England...we do complain about the rain when we get too much but it's so welcome when we've had a dry spell!
I've found it very tiresome to come home from work night after night & have to water the garden...especially when so many plants have gone over but if you don't water them you could lose them for next year.
Tonight the water butts are full & everything is well - soused & happy...like hubby after a beer or 2!!
Good blog Louise.:o)

6 Oct, 2009

Glad you have had a good gardening day Louise....and the rain.....a bonus.....I was pleased to have some rain today after lifting, splitting and re-planting a border....much better than the hosepipe....your cold has obviously cleared up?

Hywel!!!!! I'm just about to go to bed and I read your comment on butchery....eeeek....If I have nightmares I will let you know in the morning.........lol

PS: Louise...look forward to those pics after you've recharged the batteries :)))))))

6 Oct, 2009

It is true Louise. Sorry if I frightened you. It happened many years ago. Doesn't mean it will happen again.
Sleep well Amblealice... pleasant dreams :o)

6 Oct, 2009

Lovely blog louise, ican't wait for a few shots of the mist as well, just make sure there are no arms or legs dangling from any of the branches before you post them. Lol :~))

7 Oct, 2009

we got the mist and rain, couldn't see much all day but the ground doesn't need watering, I missed the slot to cut the grass, so I'm hoping it will dry up later in the week

7 Oct, 2009

lol Ian - I have to say its not the things you can see that frighten me, its the things you can't...

7 Oct, 2009

Don't fret , there arent many butchers left anymore all the meat packings done in factories far from the countryside!!
Great to see the folks cheering the appearance of the rain, who'd have thought so many would complain it was too warm and dry?
Had the ladies in the post office in stitches yesterday by walking in a declaring loudly OH WHAT A LOVELY DAY!!! in my cheeriest voice and then saying well it makes a change for you after the last couple of hundred have come in saying how miserable it is eh!

7 Oct, 2009

Good for you Indy - me, I'm still getting over having to clean my magnifying mirror because it was such a dull day I couldn't see properly. I've seen myself clearly for the first time for months - horrific!

7 Oct, 2009

LOL!!!

7 Oct, 2009

I do think it's strange - I can see the hills where Louise lives from up the lane above our house, and yet we only had a little drizzle here yesterday - not even enough rain to show up on the rain gauge!!

Today, though...ah, today, we've had 7mm!! No more hose!!

What a shame your camera battery was flat, Louise! The picture you painted was great!
