Today i received a large box from the Parcel Force man and my sister, who lives in South America, had gone online and ordered me 3 Alstroemerias from my favourite and brilliant Alstromeria supplier (here in the UK) Viv Marsh
:-))))

Her and i don’t see each other much but we email most days and that helps to take away some of the loneliness of missing each other.

In the box were 3 little beauties …..

Aimi – which is cream, gold and pink, Little Eleanor – which is yellow and gold and …. Phoenix which has 6 flowers on, so i’ve taken a picture …. a real treat to see on a December day :-)

Phoenix is the only one i have in my collection with variegated leaves – i love it :-)))

Thank you sister xxx

How lovely and how amazing that they have come all the way from South America and look so fresh. Perhaps they will help you feel nearer to her in the big wide (small) world.

Mad, i misled you, what a twit i am :-(
Viv Marsh is a UK Alstroemeria plantsman, i've ordered from him in the past and the quality of his plants is second to none.

Busylizzy, these are to planted out now actually !
Sounds a bit much doesn't it, but they're to go outside. You could put them in a cold frame but they'll survive just fine outside over winter.
Mine came through the last winter fine.
You wouldn't think that such gorgeous, delicate looking flowers would manage it would you ;-))

Oh...Louise....how lovely!!.....and a beautiful present from your sister....I know you miss her like mad. Haven't seen variegated leafed ones before..such a pretty colour...must have a little browse on that site.:)))))

It looks an expensive site but when you know that the plants you receive are mature, established plants with fantastic root systems on them and great growth they're very good value for money.

At certain times they have half price sales too .... i stock up then :-)))

You are lucky to have her - she may be a long way away, but that's a great present! :-)))) (P.S. I wish they'd grow in my garden. I have given up on them!)

3 Dec, 2009

Oh lucky you, will look forward to seeing the photos next year, might give them a go if I can find a space lol

Ahw, what a nice present that lasts and grows and mixes so well in bouquets! Aren't they from Peru originally or someplace in SA?

4 Dec, 2009

Orgratis, you are exactly right !
They're the Peruvian Lily and they come as the taller type (2-3') or a shorter type (8-12").
They're easy to grow if you can give them well drained soil.

What beautiful plants - aren't sisters wonderful? I wish I had one! Oh well, my brother's not too bad - lol.

Wagger, my sister is 'so' generous and really thinks about what to give :-)

You'll have to nudge your brother in the direction of a couple of nursery website ;-)))
