Exmoor

Fab time had by all!! On Friday Hubby, me and the 3 dogs packed up the car and headed west to Exmoor. Taking 3 dogs was rather like packing for small children, their bags took up most space! Dogs bowls, food, treats, bed etc!!
We stayed in Exford at The Crown pub which was excellent food and very friendly and the dogs slept in our room and joined us for bar meals in front of the fire!!
The Crown had a very pleasant water garden walk and I found these funny little boot plant holders!!
Saturday took us to Lanacre Bridge and the River Barle where I spent a good couple of hours collecting some of the beautiful Silver river washed slate for mosaic making. The puppy Slugs kept taking the slate out of the backpack and ended up standing in the river finding stones for herself!!
Now to the beautiful village of Dunster with it’s amazing castle and Wool market. We so enjoyed walking around this village, pity we didn’t have more time to peruse the back streets!
We spent a lovely hour in a gallery looking at the paintings of Maurice Bishop well worth a google if ya into arty stuff!!
I also bought my garden a presant!! (one meant to be for my Mum but can’t bear to part with either of these planters!!, she will be getting bubble bath and choccys instead!!)
I think those are just lovely, am very pleased with them!
And now to my favourite bit and the reason for our going to Exmoor!! SLATE, wonderful, silvery and perfect for mosaics indoor and outdoor. This slate shines even when dry, I love it!!
We picked up kilos of slate, which will keep me busy for some time! Even the puppy Slugs helped, she started out by taking the slate out of the backpack!! Then she went into the river to find her own stones. I am seriously begining to believe that she thinks she’s human as she likes to do what I do, which sometimes is a bit unhelpful! I had to put her in the house whilst washing the stones as she kept knicking them!!
All in all we had a really good time but no Otters in sight, I think one,the dogs would scare them off, two, we were’nt really looking out for them and three, wrong time of day!

Do like your planters,it brings back pleasant memories ,a few years ago we traveled down to Dunster by steam train in December to see it all lit up for Christmas and watch the candlelight parade through the streets, the Gallery was open as were all the other shops plus of course many roadside stalls as well.

Looks like you had a great weekend Lulu, as well as hubby and the dogs. I bet Millie missed you all. Can't wait to see the results of that wonderful slate, providing you can find it , if Suggs doesn't get there first.

Looks a lovely place Lulu. Glad you enjoyed your weekend. We had friends over and took them to the Scottish Antiques and Arts Centre. They loved it, we were there for HOURS!! Which is great because my OH won't go there normally..he hates old stuff! I got a lovely art deco vase..amber coloured glass. I am very pleased with it! Thanks for sharing your weekend with us!

Antiques and art, what fun! The vase sounds nice too.

Lulu, thank you for telling us about Maurice Bishop . . . I have "had" to order a couple of prints - they are fabulous! Will try to visit Dunster, too, after seeing Spritz's garden in June. Such excitements to look forward to. :))

Oh Sheilabub, thats great news that you looked up Mr Bishop AND ordered a couple of prints!! Which ones did you choose? I had a quick look at his site yesterday and was amazed at how prolific he was. It was an amazing gallery, his work is so different from most other artists. We should find out when the county show is on and maybe some of us could meet up there, we will be the ones with the 3 big black and white dogs!!!! Not easy to miss the Girls!

Lulu, I meant to tell you....at the SAAC the other day, there was a mosaic. Nothing like yours, just a fairly unimaginative interpretation of a box topiary. It was framed. It was about 9"x20" as I recall and it was priced£265. I thought of you when I saw it and wish I'd had my camera, I'd have snapped it to show you. Honestly, it was nothing like your beautiful creations and I thought I'd never pay that amount for it.

Blimey thats pricey, had better hike mine up, which I will do when a have more confidence. Was the mosaic made out of square tesserae? I find them very hard to make anything truely interesting. There was a mosaic stall in Cirencester over xmas, they were a bit boring I thought and funnily enough lots of topiary ones!
25 Jan, 2011
Yes, exactly right...terracotta tesserae. The Romans seemed to be able to make great stuff with them, but then they had huge floors to work with.
25 Jan, 2011
That's true, the Romans were quite good were'nt they! Have you ever seen a micro mosaic, 1,000 tesserae per cm!!
Still prefer mine though!
25 Jan, 2011
Whoa? For real? that would require some strong lenses to work with! No I haven't Lulu. I prefer yours also, and I think they are a lot more valuable than the one I saw on Saturday! Your designs are truly original and creative. Not to everyone's taste I suppose, but then what is? I LOVE them!

Lulu, I'm amazed at how prolific MB is too. My choices are "Sunrise at Lyme Regis" and "Bluebell path along the Lyn". Thanks for the name! :))

will take a look at them Sheilabub. There are a couple I would like to order as well............!

Hi Lulu33,I couldn,t believe what i was reading, The bridge at Lanacre is a very favorite of ours, we have spent many happy hours there on our motorbikes, and in the car, like you, with our dog Mojo,(she is no longer with us ).We have a caravan over near there and we spend all the summer going to these sort of places. Withypool is just over the hill. about 2 miles away,I will try and send you a photo of it.We just can't seem to keep away from there. My husbands blogs will perhaps explain.I will PM you.

Thank you for sharing your trip, Lulu . . . what a beautiful place, and you must have had it more or less to yourselves? I love the boot planters, and agree about the gorgeous slate - specially the "multi" one in bottom RH corner of last pic! (Next time the sun shines I'll take a photo of mine like that in my Japanesy patch).
