Pets in Care Homes

Some time ago we were discussing, in our blogs, the possibility of people in Care Homes being able to have their pets with them. This was in a Private Member’s Bill introduced in the Commons by Nigel Waterson MP.
I think we were all in favour, but with provision for the practicalities, such as the extra costs incurred for care of the pets, vets’ bills, etc.
I contacted the MP concerned and he has told me that the proposed Bill will cover all that with the suggestion that a charge would be levied for those things.
I hope this wouldn’t mean that the poorest pensioners wouldn’t be able to have their pets.
I should think it would be ages before the bill could be passed anyway with an Election looming. So its Wait and See.

There's ALWAYS a catch in these suggestions, isn't there. :-(

What would happen to the pet if the owner died first? .

This idea has been around for sometime and the benefits seem to be proven! I think some animal charities would help with the costs, as they already do by finding new homes when the owners die. But an animal has to go to the vets and be fed before they go into a home Mad so surely most could continue to provide for their pets?

I'm not so sure they could Drc as pensioners with nothing but their OAP have to hand over their pension to the Home, apart from a small amount of pocket money, so anything the animal charities can do is really needed.
Those with savings over a certain amount have to contribute that too. Costs are huge from about £2,000 a week upwards.
Its all under discussion at the moment, isn't it, so what the future of care holds is anyone's guess.
Mavis, Drc has answered that question I think.

I am pleased that they would be okay then.
