Visting Trebah

Having a bit more time on my hands these days me and friend joined the National Trust as we have several homes and gardens nearby the nearest being Glendurgan and Trellissick. To start our trips off we visted the nearest Trebah which is’nt NT but gives half price admittance to NT members in February. We often walk the coastal path which skirts the garden and vist the plant and gift shop and cafe (lovely food), but had’nt visted the garden for years. Really enjoyed it despite quite a gloomy day weatherwise and will not leave it so long before another vist! Just up the lane from me is another private garden open to the public called Penjerrick which strangely i have’nt got around to visting yet, sometimes things right on your doorstep seem to fall to back of que. I remember vaguely reading that the first tree ferns were grown there when came with ballast from ships but don’t quote me on that i may be thinking of one of the other gardens.

Trebah has lots of lovely tree ferns and variety of bamboos and the view down the valley to the beach is lovely. If you have children/grandchildren when you vist they are well catered for with areas to play and lots of events i strongly reccomend a vist if you are in the area.

I was watching an old GW I had recorded last week & they had Trebah on there. It looked lovely & the bamboo was incredible.
Glad you enjoyed your visit.

Thats something I like to do as well, visiting grand houses and gardens, We used to belong to the NT and did visit lots of places, now we have changed to the English Heritage as they have more in our area, just as enjoyable though..

I think I've got the right place-- on the Helford river-- and didn't American soldiers leave from there on D Day?, lovely gardens with interesting history

Yes thats the place Pamg, gardens lead down to private beach, how lucky some people were/are to be able to create beautiful gardens in such lovely spots, and we are lucky to be able to wander amongst them now! English Heritage have Pendennis castle here in Flamouth and think that may be another membership in the future. Lovely way to spend a day losing yourself around these places.

I once went to a big function at Pendennis, it was a marquee on the Peninsula there(the castle was used for cocktails) imagine men in dj,s and ladies in pretty dresses, all was well until the wind began to blow and the rain came down......luckily the marquee didn,t!!! although we all got pretty wet crossing thenarrow drawbridge to get to the coaches......:0). Marvellous setting though!

sounds lovely Pamg, shame the typical Cornish weather had to spoil it! Keep meaning to go to one of their evening spooky tours but have'nt managed it yet..something else on my long to do list!!

I think it's always windy at Pendennis! Younger son lives just round the corner, next to the Maritime Museum in Falmouth. You're in one of the best counties for NT membership Maezy . . . we keep our membership going just for visiting the wonderful gardens in Cornwall, and free parking at Kynance Cove!

Yes Sheilabub think we have got a good selection of NT places here and aim to do them all by end of year! We also have a dog and like to walk so the free parking at the NT car parks also mean we don't have to walk so far back to the car and and if you like Kynance have you been to Godrevy, stunning coastline, good cafe and seal spotting (young ones in cove above carpark in breeding season so if you have'nt next time you vist son add it to your itinery.

Oooh, thanks Maezy . . . no, I don't know Godrevy, but won't be surprised if our son does - thanks for telling me - "stunning coastline and good cafe" does it for me!
