My Autumn Garden.........

Hello all,

Not been about much lately, sorry about that, I have missed you all, but I have just been so busy what with Brooke starting school, and other stuff going on. To be honest not even had much time in the garden recently – let alone time to write about it… not to mention I lost my camera… but you will be glad to know I FOUND IT this morning, so thought I would take a little walk around my autumn garden with it….fancy it?….well come on then……

Well at first glance it does’nt look like too much is going on does it!… where are all the bright oranges and crimson colours that we all love about autum, and come to expect at the end of October?

Well I know they are out there somewhere…… the Rhus tree down the road is stunning bright reds and oranges….but mine…well still green with a few curling yellow bits…. it is most strange… as you can see my garden is still very green, and I have lots still in flower…. I don’t know about the rest of the UK but we still have’nt had a proper frost yet… but I am determined to find some autumness…so lets have a closer look shull we…

Well that is a bit more like it, I think this little corner says autumn quite well…here we have Miscanthus sinensis, Saxifraga fortunei ‘Rubrifolia’, Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ the pretty yellowish grass in the background is Carex morrowii, and on the fence we have Jasminum x stehanense – which is actually varigated but starting to turn. .. I gues the Phormium ‘Jester’ is a little bit of cheat as it is always this lovely bright orange colour, but you have to use what you’ve got don’t you…..

And just to make the point….here is a closer view….

and closer yet…….

I just love this colouring…….

What else can i find out here that says autumn………

…well how about this…..

One of my favorite autumn plants has to be this lovely little Ceratostigma ‘Autumn Blue’, obviously made more autumn like with the flurry of yellow leaves that have fallen off the Willow teepee, and Elder tree behind…. sometimes it pays not to be too tidy in the garden…..

And for all of you that are wondering what that pretty pinkish shrub was in the background of the first picture…… well here come the Acer’s…….

Close up Acer ‘Taylor’…. it’s another little cheat like the Phormium ‘Jester’ as it is this colour all year round….

But it just fits this autumn theme so well…..

Most of my Acer’s are not giving off the magnificent colour you expect in fact the only other one that has any glimps of autumn on it’s leaves is this one….

Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ – not as orange as it usually is… I am hoping it will turn before it drops……

and here are some more lovely autumn leaves….. this is a lilac bush…

Ofcourse the bonus you get with a long, mild autumn is what you lack in leaf colour is made up for with flower power……and often the best is saved for last

For example, – this rather large stunner is a Cactus Dahlia called ‘Kenora Macob’ it has only come into flower in the the last 2 weeks….. better late than never I say….

Gaura lindheimeri ‘Passionate Blush’ is new in this year, and got attacked quite badly earlier in the year by something black and nasty…looked a bit like lily bettle lava, don’t know if it was or not, but I got rid of it with a good spray, but it was damaged quite badly so never did it’s best. A few months down the line and a bit of TLC and just look at it now…. the best it’s looked all year…. especially partnered with this lovely Euphorbia ‘Silver Swan’, which is also in it’s first year, so I will be expecting flowers from it next year!

Trusty autumn favorites Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’ and the must have for me Skimmia japonica… I have two varieties, this one and a beautiful varigated one.

David Austin Rose ‘The Pilgrim’…. now this is another one that just did’nt do well this summer, and it was not from lack of trying, it seemed everytime it got going something horid would have a good munch on it…. it seems to be coping ok though, this is just one of many flowers and still more to come….

Alchemilla mollis – Lady’s Mantle, I did’nt know that this flowered during autumn, but it obviously does, if you cut it back late summer…. Does’nt it fit in so nicely in my autumn garden……

October can be quite a messy time of year can’t it… I don’t know about you but I am usually itching to get out there and tidy up, and often I get all to carried away with the pulling out, trimming and pruning that I miss some of it’s charm… This year however I just have’nt had the time to do very much… which looking at these next pictures, I’m thinking a good thing… have a look and see what you think…..

We have a riot of weeds, mingling in with the last of the summer flowers and grasses

Over grown with complementry spider webs and nests……..

and not forgetting dead annuals, and dried seed heads……..

what a shame to miss this beauty…. glad I have’nt had the time to sort it out….

and last but not least, in my opinion no autumn garden is complete without these…….

Clematis tangutica…..

…and not forgetting…….

The Ornimental Cabbage, this was in B&Q sale a few weeks ago for 50p as it had been a bit nibbled…. it seems to have recovered quite nicely….

Well that’s all for now, I hope you are all enjoying autumn as much as I am…….

~as long as it isn't a heavy one!I still have buds and flowers opening on a couple of clematis and a heavy frost will probably see them go brown!

Your garden looks great - frost or no frost, Angie! Thanks for the tour. There really are signs of autumn when you look for them - I should know! I've been head first bottom up in the border rescuing plants from drowning in poplar leaves this afternoon. (Don't try to picture the scene, though, please! LOL).

Oh, and that Dahlia is a stunner! :-))

Looks fab Ang its changed so much :)

What lovely pix. Angie. I sometimes think we can be in too much of a hurry to 'put the garden to bed' that we miss seeing things.

oh San and Arlene..... everything in its season guys... you are suposed to be gardeners, dealing with the cold is all part of it i'm affraid..anyway this is not cold...do you remeber last winter???.... and it is a Salix TT, the common name is 'Falmingo Tree' it also has catkins in the spring, have a look on my garden page, loads more info and pic's...
And thanks all for so many nice comments, yes it has changed a lot since this time last year, do you remeber I wrote several blogs at the begining of the year, on all the changes i made, i think they have improved the garden really well...and Spritz...now i have the image in my head lol.... as long as you had fun i gues....

~ yes Angie I am fraid it's because I remember -8 and freezing ice and my hubby breaking his leg in three places that I would prefer if it freezes later ~ it still is mild here with quite high temperatures but damp or wet~we have had quite a lot of rain.
Maybe now is the time to order those things with spikes you put over your boots!

30 Oct, 2009

Forward thinking, always a good idea Arlene, sorry to hear about your hubby, i am never very fond of the icy mornings to be honest, i don't mind the cold it is the danger factor on the roads and paths especially now i will be walking with Brooke to school every morning, can be very dangerous can't it. but the cold weather i do quite like, it makes every thing feel clean and coming in from the cold into a nice warm house is nice.... and not forgetting Christmas! :D

30 Oct, 2009

Totally agree about the roads comment.
In the winter months i start work later in the hope that the 'danger factor' has passed/thawed a bit by 9.30 when i'm on them !!!

30 Oct, 2009

I hate icy and Fog too but I have noticed that we dont get the fogs down here that we use to?

30 Oct, 2009

mmm thats a good option Louise, your lucky to have it, i wonder if Brookes teacher would mind if i took her in a 10am lol...no i don't think so.... never mind will have to continue the skating routine with her lol.... and we have had fog last few days Drc did you get it? not freezing though...

30 Oct, 2009

No fog here at all damp and mild still.

30 Oct, 2009

30 Oct, 2009

30 Oct, 2009

30 Oct, 2009

you might regret saying that Moon grower... do you know how many i often load all at once... usually without comments or even lables/titles for a few days lol.... i am always being told off for it! lol :D

30 Oct, 2009

Good to have you back, great pics, we havnt much autumn colour, it is still too warm here, the leaves are falling before that can change their colour.

31 Oct, 2009

thanks DD2 nice to be back, although i just don't get the same amount of time for this i used to, i will still be around here and there..... and i know just what you mean... i have lots of leaf fall but no orange or red anywhere in the garden there is a cherry tree an apple, a rhus several acers and they are all yellow or brown :-( never mind i managed to get some autumness with this other stuff glad you enjoyed.... i am off to collect some of the fallen leaves in a mo... both me and Brooke have the dreaded swine flu we are over the worst - i think but still within the 10 days so are confined in the house... i thought we could do some autumn leaf rubbing pictures today.....

1 Nov, 2009

Oh dear sorry to hear you are both poorly, hope you will be feeling better soon, at least you will be ok for Christmas if that is any consolation?

1 Nov, 2009

thanks Dd2 but not necessarly, this is the second time we have had it, apparently it has mutated and now there are so many different strians of it that any cold or flu is probably linked with it... we are both over the worst but still spreading germs so staying in for a few more days so as not to spread it around.... just as well looking at how the weather has been.....

1 Nov, 2009

Poor things. :-(( Get well soon, both of you!

1 Nov, 2009

2 Nov, 2009

thanks Grindle

2 Nov, 2009

Not really a cheat to have plants that shine all year, with different contrasts as the seasons change --- just excellent planning on your part! Love that Jester. Hope you all feel better soon, maybe drinking some of that elderberry extract you no doubt put up in your "spare" time...

2 Nov, 2009

thanks Orgratis, :-)

5 Nov, 2009

Enjoyed your autumn garden tour Majeek, I had the salix flamingo in my old garden, but lost it. I love it but found it to be but a little tender. Do you have to protect it at all in the winter?

22 Nov, 2009

hi Bornagain, to be honest no, i have 2 of them a standard and a bush type and i don't protect either of them, this will be their third year without any problems, i notice you are in the middlands, maybe this is why, i am just outside of London, why not try again and protect with fleese for the winter?

23 Nov, 2009

I've seen a bargain one on ebay so I may :-)
