A vvisit to Open Gardens.

My Garden Club was making a visit to some local open Gardens in Cawood, which is the Selby area of West Yorkshire. 5 or 6 car loads of us descended on the sleepy village. A prosperous looking village, which is on a river side.

The first Garden we visited was also the smallest, a more normal sized suburban Garden, it’s shape was oblong running east to west. They had crammed so many things into it. It included a Chinese section, complete with bridge and Pagoda. There were winding paths leading through, difefferent planting schemes leading to a Zen section, there was seating so you could sit and enjoy the tranquility. There was another pathway leading to the Conservatory, where they were serving refreshments.

I think by now you will have realised I had forgotten the camera AGAIN!
This was the first Garden from the Yellow book that we had visited, I was very impressed with the kindness of the Owners.

The Second garden was more of a park. It was huge. Very Beautiful and well planned with lots of trees and shrubs I did not recognise. It was here that we first realised what “rooms” in a garden really meant. There was the lake with fantastic pink waterlillies. They were perfection.

We saw Espallier apples, well done, but I felt concern they were mature trees, but there was quite a bit of grey mould on them. They had formal vegetable beds complete with box hedges! It was good to see what different veggies look like in different stages (theres are much in advance to mine, but I put it down to the protection of the hedges). They also had an Exotic plants area.

The third and last Garden, was actually more to my taste, all curves. Crammed again with mature plants and trees, a lot of unusual ones. They had a water feature in a pebble pond, that ran into a rill, which in turn led into a deep pool with Carp. This Garden had it all, Pergalas, B.B.Q., area, shaded seating, sunny seating. Its Lawns were large and well kept. I think it was PRICELESS, you couldn’t put a value on what this Garden gave off, in terms of feel good factor.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day out. We are no longer Open day virgins!
