Teabags

There is a small article in the Daily Mirror today about composting teabags apparently they do not fully decompose. It is most of the good brands as well ,it is apparently better to tear them before you put them in your compost bin.Just thought I would share this information to all on G.o.Y. – Mavis

In the Telegraph as well today lol We talked about this last year it seems its ok to add them if you split them first? I gave up as they seem so much dust anyway?

I do just this too, put finger through them and chuck them in, I also do not drink tea !

Thanks for the inf. but I don't buy tea bags - they're too strong, even the 'one cup' ones. I make tea in a teapot with a few grains of loose tea and afterwards I fill it up with cold water and give it to my house plants :o)).
It's good to know though - for people who use them. Very thoughtful of you to share your information. Thanks. I can pass it on to others :o))

My Partners Father just told me about this Article.....We drink Tea,Cylon, it is not so strong and tastes a lot better then most. I been ripping the bags open and have added some to the pots....If Garden Guru Stan (his Dad) says it's okay then I will give it a try

I always open used teabags too,as I used to put them them straight in the compost bin...3 years on,and I still find the odd outer bag in the soil when I dig it over !.I think I read that banana skins are good for roses, but you need a heck of a lot to make a difference, and a lot of digging in.Lol.better straight in the compost bin,I think...

Bloomer on GW one evening Monty Don said when you plant a new rose just place one banana skin beneath the roses roots and thats it ! suppose it gives instant potassium ? and then the rest go into the compost. Its funny how everyone has a different idea eh?

I love these old wives tales & sayings...all my teabags go in the compost
bin...i am glad this subject came up, as i used to always find them when
emptying the compost, they do not break down easily, so in future i will
have to start piercing them, before placing in compost.thanks for Info Mavis..i find also, that if you do not crush egg shells, they do not break down easily either..i always crush mine now, i do also cut all veggies up into tiny pieces, and also everything that can be chopped, so they do compost a lot quicker, than if left..
Interesting Blog Mavis....: ~ ))) My Mother-In-Law always used to put Banana
skins underneath her House plants, they always looked Healthy!!!

I didn't see that,Grandmage, but its a good idea...I was thinking more about already established roses..will bear that in mind.
I haven't tried this with banana's either..but apparently, the inside of the skin, acts as a good leaf shine on houseplant leaves...anyone else heard this,or tried it ?
Freesiaperson, its a better idea to crush them first,as you are right, they don't break down well.Have you tried saving them in an old plastic container when you have crushed them?..ideal for putting on the soil round plants that are prone to slugs and snails.....like a little mini gravel circle.Lol. I must admit it isn't the most decorative sight to see,but as the plant grows, especially Hosta's,it is hidden by the growth later.

Thanks for the tip Bloomer... my Hosta`s are all in pots or containers, with
copper bands around them, that keep the slugs off, they will not pass the
copper,so, cannot get into them...i will make a note of your tip though for
future reference Bloomer....

That's probably better Freesiaperson, being in pots.I love Hosta's but only have one now,as haven't room for them really.

Thanks for the information Mavis. I had wondered and therefore I started putting them in the green bin for Council composting which I believe grinds it all up anyway. Thus I don't end up trying to hide them under a large leaf when they appear in my home-made stuff.
With regard to Bloomer's comment on banana skins, I have not heard of putting them under over or wherever in the vicinity of plants, but if you find that none of these tips are productive, I am told that the inside of the skins are good for shining shoes!
Must go and eat a banana!
