Just a short blog about the pruning method for climbing roses.I was determined this autumn to follow a video on You tube showing the correct way to do this.Previously I haven’t known what I was doing really and chopped here and there.
The climber had produced many main stems which had to be reduced to only 4/5.The straggly bits near the soil were also removed.Next the laterals from the main stems were cut right back.
The main stems were fanned out and secured with ties. All the diseased fallen foliage cleared away.
Apparently doing it this way will encourage many blooms all the way up the climber. We will just have to wait and see…fingers crossed.
I’ve included 2 photos showing the finished result and how it was before.

I does work M'land, I followed Alan Titchmarshes instructions a few year back and my climbers have certainly benefitted, so have I, in the past I had to admire the blooms from the bedrooms, now I have blooms lower down as well...

I appreciate this blog as my climbing Rose, Arthur Bell, is in need of a tidy up. Reluctant to do it right now though as it is still producing some lovely flowers!

that is a job well done. I have always trained as many stems as close to the horizontal as that is what the old man next door to my mum insisted it had to be done. you certainly get more flowers that way.

Thanks for that Julia, I needed to know this too. I could do to cut mine to the ground and then hopefully new stems will come up that I can train.
