Three days before the 'Big Heat'

A few photos showing the plants still looking lush….a very different picture today…..the Roses and Dahlias are looking very sorry for themselves as are other shrubs.

Even the Hidcote Lavenders are now succumbing .

It’s 8.30pm Monday…just spent half an hour deadheading, watering and walking πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ slowly Now in a bath of perspiration…not a good idea to even attempt any light garden jobs at this time of the evening. Hope you are all more sensible than me!
Roll on lower temps on Wednesday.

You take it easy Julia, have a good long cool drink.
At 9pm it was 27C in the house and the greenhouse and the general garden. Even hubby's workshop was 26C and that is always much cooler than the rest of the garden buildings.

I watered the veg and any pot that had a wilting plant in it. Our water company is sending strong messages out about saving water. they are trying to avoid a hosepipe ban.

Lovely photographs Julia.... I took a slow walk around tonight watering, took me ages but I actually felt good doing it, I did use the hosepipe as not up to carting watering cans, although I made sure its still allowed first, I was shocked at the state of the garden, it looked as though autumn had arrived, not really been seeing it for a week, poor hubby had done his best for me, not his fault by any means, I'll sort it when I'm back on par, might have to do the Chelsea Chop on some but it will bounce back, its actually amazing really that anything looked good with the heat we are experiencing.....

It still looks good to me, Meadow. I think the only exercise I am having at the moment is watering plants. Lots of small bits to keep going. I did cut back a huge geranium last evening, now have to work out where to put it as all the compost heaps are full to overflowing.

Same problem here Ange...bins overflowing and cut vegetation piling up....Eileen, I fear a hosepipe ban is imminent....although I try to use watering cans as much as possible....the front garden is so long the thought of doing that would probably be a great workout...not!!
Lincs,it does look like Autumn I agree....soil is so desertlike.Hope you are feeling better....I know that feeling our gardens are our life lines and daily nurturing is so important.

It feels as though I've gone backwards this morning but thats probably the heat as much as anything, it saps ones energy under normal circumstances, apart from energy levels I would class myself as better now but still testing positive, I'm not going anywhere Julia so that doesn't really matter..

Same here...wont be watering until 9.0pm! Don't know why I wrote feeling our gardens..I meant doing..must be the heat!
Noticed the Hellibores have exhausted themselves. They look and feel like cardboard..not noticed that before.

Picture perfect garden Julia. You are doing excellent job keeping it so beautiful.
Hope the heat there will move on soon, hopefully towards our direction. We had a very cold spring and summer still have not arrived to this place. Although, most North America is hot also.

That's so kind of you Klahanie.I'll do my best to persuade it towards your way.Thankfully tomorrow it's going to drop by 10degrees.We had rain here for 10. minutes this afternoon.

Your garden looks lovely, I hope it has not suffered too much since you took the photos. Perhaps the plants will all bounce back when we get rain. We may have them all blooming beautifully in September ( wishful thinking).

It looks as lovely as it usually does, but if your garden is like mine you can see the suffering when you get up close. We had a tiny bit of rain this afternoon and ane istand lightening flash and one quiet roll of thunder but it came to nothing. The local weather forecast says it should rain at eleven p.m It has

It looks as attractive as ever to me. I'd forgotten how hard watering is - must have got much weaker since the least time we had a run of dry weather... We had a distant lightening flash and a slight attempt at a roll of thunder but all the excitement came to nothing.

Thanks so much FF and Stera...today is heaven....the plants are definitely looking better.Rain here for 5 minutes only!

Julia, all three of our water butts are now empty, so I shall have to fill the watering cans from the hosepipe now. I have put a big garden trug, you know the heavy duty plastic ones with handles, outside the kitchen door and throw the dish water into it. 'Grey water' is better than none! No rain forecast ... :o(

20 Jul, 2022

Well thought out....our butts are empty too....I've just planted 3 new perrenials to give colour because the rose blooms are non existent.....Will have to be patient for the 2nd ones.

Our temp finally normalised today! 21 degrees. Hooray!

Kate,no worries at all...it's been far too hot to do anything....you must have enjoyed having your parents to stay...keep safe...x

Good to hear you're doing ok! It's a task required to keep our garden and wildlife safe and healthy, but, still, it's good to hear you're doing ok!
Mum and Dad left this morning, we've had a lovely week!
I'm over to Hornsea tomorrow evening for a music and dance show!

22 Jul, 2022

So lucky to enjoy a week with them....they are very lucky to have you!

Just found this blog Julia!
I think your garden is just perfect and only you can see the problems!
I have managed to water with the hose in one hand and my stick in the other.
I have two hoses one in both sides of the garden , so only have to switch the tap on. But my alstromerias finished before I could dead head them!
Very disapointed about that! I daren't bend down to cut them back incase I fell!
Hopefully they will come back for a late show!

Hi Rose good to hear you are a little mobile...deadheading can be a little destabilising if you reach too far...take care....oh, the photos in the blog were taken just before the great heat. Now the shrubs are beginning to perk up.
