A shock to see that almost all the Geese had gone.

Arriving at the lake this morning
it looked rather eerie. There were only a handful of young geese there. We did read about a possible cull because the fishermen weren’t happy with them there. We stopped a lady who looked local and she said it had certainly taken place passed by a Councillor. She was very angry about it. I’m presuming a local farmer will do very well at Xmas time!
Just didn’t have the same atmosphere today.

The following photos were only taken a few months ago showing how the wildlife attract the families.

That's awful Julia! How cruel!

Isn't it just,Rose...they were such an attraction for the families. Hope you are improving x

Their droppings are large, they pollute the water turning it into a anoxic soup and I certainly would not want to see children play in an area covered with that breathing in fecal dust. Sorry and I understand your sentiment but they can turn a public park into one big toilet in no time at all.

Apparently Canada Geese are too good at breeding so culling is a way to make sure that the native wildlife get a chance to survive.

Still very sad....better to be on the safe side....

Oh, that’s sad to hear, Julia. I can see both sides I guess, but yes, it’s still sad.

When I was a voluntary part time warden at a local marsh up in Staffordshire Canada geese were kept in check by oiling the eggs rather than culling the birds. Its still a horrible thought but better than slaughter don't you think? It can cause such problems when non natives are introduced and they become "too successful." All very sad.

That's interesting Stera...as you say a much better method....thank you for saying.I suppose we were too sentimental.

I am sorry that this has happened and it is a shame that it made you feel sad. Stera’s methods of keeping numbers down sound far more considered and humane. If only everyone would plan and think ahead.

Quite agree Chris...I feel the fishermen wanted immediate action and culling was the answer.

You can imagine the outcry if they tried the same with grey squirrels...
