The Old and the New!

Beachley has been a crossing point over the River Severn possibly since Roman times. The crossing is known as the Old Passage. It connects Beachley with Aust on the Bristol side.In the 18th century 3 inns existed in Beachley to cater for passengers using the ferry. The oldest is the Old Ferry Inn.Sadly in 2018 it was put up for sale with the intention of a housing development. Thankfully these didn’t materialise. It has been converted to business premises keeping the original exterior facade.
This is only a couple miles from where we live.
During the 60s the ferry was the only way to cross the river…I remember during college days driving pass the house we now live in not knowing we would eventually end up here.
It’s sad to think there is no more ferry,we’ll there is one which is being restored. The Old Severn Bridge is a beautiful engineering structure and has opened up much needed communications between Wales and England.

Sorry we weren’t able to enter the premises to take photos of the Inn.

An interesting blog, and I'm glad the housing development didn't go ahead.

I remember the old ferry and quing (can't spell that) for several hours until the tide came in, so that the ferry could sail. It was either that or going all the way around through Gloucester.

In 1965 we went (parents brother and a teenage me) on a holiday to Devon and the old bridge was being constructed at the time. We sailed under it and I took photos of it on my cine camera.

The following year we went on a holiday to Dorset and drove over the bridge. My brother had a Guinea pig called Wally, and she came in the car with us, and we used to laugh at the thought of a Guinea pig crossing the Severn bridge.
I personally preferred the ferry.

Pity you weren’t allowed to just take a pic of the Old Ferry Inn facade. What harm would it have done? I remember driving over an old bridge across theSevern to Wales, but on the way back was directed over a new bridge. After that I never did find my way over the old bridge again. One was always directed over the new bridge( toll to be paid going to Wales), but not on the way back! Is that because they want us to go home again :-). Am I talking about the same bridges?
