Our venture westward.

This year we decided to holiday in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire rather than France. It was also our 55th wedding anniversary, emerald I think. It was probably one of the best decisions we have made considering the fire outbreaks in the south.(Although it was very wet and windy there were flashes of sunshine) Anyway there’s always next year.
We stayed at Picton House, a small 6 bedroomed hotel with restaurant facilities.
As you entered the hotel you couldn’t miss the wall showing a collection of beautiful mirrors. Photo at the very end of blog.
Onwards to Narbeth. It was founded around a Welsh Court and later became a Norman stronghold. It’s a delightful little Georgian/Edwardian market town with multi coloured buildings. It has become quite a shopper’s heaven with independent shops.
I was able to find an unusual handbag sporting the William’s tartan for a friend’s 70th birthday. That was a huge relief having thought for ages as to what would be suitable.
There is a very distinctive town hall boasting a clock tower at the end of the high street. The traffic still passes through the town unlike many others in the UK (Chepstow being one)
Where the Councils have decided to close off the shopping high streets. The shops seemed to be so busy and there were no closures to be seen.
A quick snack was had and we continued towards Laugharne where Dylan Thomas, the Welsh poet lived.
Below the photo shows a convenient half way watering spot for weary dogs! His house is situated a the end of quite a steep trek.
The Boathouse blue shed is where Dylan Thomas wrote many of his poems.
On our walk we passed extremely old Welsh cottages still being occupied but showing much weather deterioration.
Walking along the Estuary the precarious looking Laugharne Castle remains rise up before you. This is the ‘brown owls’ Castle loved by Dylan. The Castle is situated on the edge of the River Taff.
Hope this blog has given you a little insight in this area and perhaps jogged memories of recent visits.

We were told by our coach driver, that one of the Castles had a request from Neil Morrisey, to turn it into a Restaurant ,a few years ago..possibly at Narbeth ? Not certain ,as it was quite a while ago,but thankfully it was unanimously turned down..!

An interesting blog on Wales! 👏 I've never been to Wales, nor Scotland for that matter, the nearest I've been to Wales was passing through Bristol - back in Easter 1972! The nearest I've been to Scotland was Whitby & Robin Hood Bay, again in 1972 but in August!
Thanks for putting up some pictures of where you had been for your anniversary holiday. Congratulations on 55 years of marriage! My wife & I will reach our 50th next year! We're just a few of a "dwindling species"! 😆 😆 😆
