December 2014

I know everyone has experienced a most unusual autumn this year, but – just as the chill seems to be finally arriving here – I wanted to record for myself just how unusual it has been.
All these pictures were taken on December 2nd.
This planter of foliage plants has grown and grown, and is still spreading. I’m not actually sure what to do with it. I think I shall leave it and see what happens :
I really thought my passionflower, new this year, had started producing buds far too late for any flowers to develop. Every now and then another flower opens, and new buds are forming. I don’t think it will go on much longer, though :
Lady Boothby has settled down happily in her planted-out position and is still flowering :
These are a little more seasonal. They have flowered really well this year:
I shall lift this down soon and put it in the greenhouse – begonias often survive the winter if they are sheltered :
Several of these primroses have been flowering for a few months :

It's nice to see things lasting into the winter. I hope the mild weather lasts too :)

We shall see... A clear sky and a bright moon here - I think it'll be chilly, but we're not expecting a frost.
That sounds a good idea, Bloomer, the planter is so big now it won't go under the table, but I might put some fleece over it. I do like mature plants in containers, so it's certainly worth trying to preserve them.
It has certainly lasted well so far, Hywel. Here's hoping!

We had a frost this morning, but I managed to get new roses in as the soil was fine. I hope it stays colder and brighter for a while. Not too cold of course, but I struggle when the light levels are so low. I've had no energy for three weeks now. As soon as the sun appears my energy returns!

Well - we may not have expected a frost, but we got one! The first frost, not too hard and rather exciting really. Lovely sun, and it soon warmed up a bit. I'm glad I brought the fuchsias etc in last week.

We've no frost this morning, but a lovely atmospheric mist over the fields, and the sky looking fairly clear. :))

That sounds nice. It's been fairly bright most if the day here, with a couple of light showers. No frost expected for a while. (Why is the weather so reliably fascinating? ? )

Isn't it though! ;)

We had frost this morning ... need to check for damage to any plants later on. I can see the Sedums are covered in it ... quite pretty though. :o)

It's been very changeable today. No frost, but it feels cold - we've had hail, sun, rain, wind - you name it! I don't think the garden is going to be dry until next year!

Lets hope they carry on a bit longer,Mel..I have that same green foliage plant..Helichrysum?as in your first photo, and it has survived the past two winters, under a solid topped Patio table ,with no problem..I do fleece it over,as an added precaution..We have had such a lovely long lasting gardening year..and you still have some lovely plants in flower too..I have potted up some of my Begonias,so lets both yours and mine survive ...Chilly forecast for tonight though :o(
