Wildflower of the week- Borago Officinalis

Since starting gardening and finding a whole new world and a new lease of life. I have become particuarly interested in the whole kingdom of wildflowers. Not only are they a lot easier than a lot of plants (not that Im lazy) they are just so very very beautiful. With so many types but so little left it is increasingly worrying for everybody.
I have decided to do a “wildflower of the week” not only does it help me learn about them as i grow them but if it helps just one person or entices 1 person to plant just a pot of wildflowers its beneficial to us all and mainly the insects.
Please feel free to correct me on anything I have wrongly mentioned, or any tips on them also will always be gratefully accepted.
My wildflower this week is:
“Borage” Borago Officinalis
my personal favourite. With five petaled stars, sky blue, sometimes pink and apparently very rarely white. This flower is beautiful, it attracts bees to your garden so I would say a definate must have even if its just in pots. The flower can be used sprinkled in salads, crystalised for cake decoration and one of my ideal things is frozen in water to make posh ice cubes.
with medicinal and cosmetics uses this wildflower is very much an all round “useful” plant.
Young leaves of the Borage can be used to help make a face pack for dry skin, a poultice of this leaf will also sooth inflammation and bruises.when crushed the juices are cucumber scented and is often used in that popular summer drink (which I dont know if Im allowed to mention) for the cucumber flavour and cooling effect.
if you plant Borage near strawberries they stimulate each others growth, and may also control tomato worm if planted near tomatoes
What I really like about this that if you burn it, the nitrate of the potash content will emit sparks and slight expolsive sounds like fireworks. Which would make me wonder was it used in olden days by those that were thought to be witches!!
Its a hardy annual plant height can reach 1-2ft 6 inches (30-75cms)
Seeds are readily available
hoped you liked my blog, Im still finding out lots of information about the Borage but wont bore you any longer.
Tune in next week (hehe) for another wildlife flower

you will find it seeds freely too. i put the flowers -minus the sepals, into rice salads for a different colour. i also shred young leaves for salads.
i've been growing it for over 20yrs now and i only planted seed once.

Lovely blog Mookins! I cheated and bought a plant, even tho' I bought some seeds first!!! Decided I wanted it for the bees, then for drinking with Pimms! (even if it will be heavily watered down with lemonade!!!) It's such a pretty plant too!

Nice idea about the wildflower of the week! Borage looks so pretty, the bees seem to visit in droves and of course it doesn't hurt any that it goes with Pimms...hmm, I don't know why I don't have any yet. I learned something new too (about the sparks). Look forward to seeing what you come up with next. :)

27 May, 2009
Yes - it's a mild county. BUT we do tend to get the rain from the prevailing west wind!
27 May, 2009
its my daughters 12th birthday today and I will be stuck indoors with a handful of teeny boppers for the next 24 hours! might have to get the Pimms out!
27 May, 2009
|t's very wet in Wales too~surprise, surprise! However the rain is hopefully filling my new water butt(2nd one).Lately although we have had lots of cloud we have not had lots of rain which is why I have bought the 2nd butt to fit onto the down pipe from the roof~slimline takes 100 litres, very neat, and hopefully hubby has received it and is sorting it out as we speak!
27 May, 2009
I need another water butt, too. I shall be looking for one. I'll be picking your brains, Arlene.
I am the proud owner of a....rain gauge!! I am watching the numbers go up..it's a remote from the actual rain collector, so I can read it indoors. Clever, eh?
Mageth, you poor, poor thing. Have you got your earplugs ready? Sympathy from me. XXXXX
27 May, 2009
my glass is ready Mageth hehe

happy birthday to your daughter
