what a nightmare all day and till about half 10 last night on and off the phone with various pc people. In the end we had to store as much info on discs as posssible and revert the pc back to the factory settings as the bugs were that badly infected !!

23 Oct, 2009
Welcome back Mookins....it is a scary place when you land up where you don't want to be isn't it! I had a brand new Trojun Virus a few weeks ago and even Norton and co. hadn't seen it before!! Luckily I was quick enough to get them involved and they wiped it for me and added it to their list .
23 Oct, 2009

23 Oct, 2009
I know! Mine was down for a week! Awful!
23 Oct, 2009
It's funny, I used to surf all over but now it's just GoY, Freecycle and Ebay that I use. I won't even do my banking on line! ! ! We had an awful virus that got everywhere and the first I knew about it was when HOLLY asked what the man and the lady were doing? Hers isn't connected to anything now so she can't get another. Disgusting is the word that sprung to mind! ! !
Welcome back Jen :~)))
23 Oct, 2009
God, Digger, I bet that freaked you out bigtime! Its awful to think that the freaks who generate these viruses are putting images like that out for wee kids to see!
23 Oct, 2009
glad you are back mookins. I'm back too.
23 Oct, 2009
Did you have a good holiday, SBG??
23 Oct, 2009
not a holiday as such, doing botany work in the Malham area of the yorkshire dales. absolutely fantastic despite the cooler damper weather.
23 Oct, 2009
As long as you enjoyed it! Welcome back!
23 Oct, 2009
thanks SBg, ooh and heres your large cuppa and biscuits as promised caramel digestives ok?
cheers Ian, its horrible isnt , at first I was shocked and laughed a bit when it first starting appearing but when its like every couple of minutes a different page or site with various "parts" I was starting to feel sick and slightly scared!
I now wont type in anything odd or link to anything different and have a very very good safety/anti virus called AVG free. we also pay £5.99 a month and we then get help from pc people when ever we want, that talk you through step by step and no computer jargon talk so understandable for all
We were told about a website called Gimp which apparently very good for photo editing... no way am I typing that in the browser !!
x xx
23 Oct, 2009
Gimp! conjures up visions immediately, what a silly name to choose. So was the porn stuff caused by a virus you picked up then?
23 Oct, 2009
No it was hubby... hehehe
sorry yeah the virus got in and everything we tried to use it just worked a way to remove. The pc people couldnt even log in from there end just kept getting booted out. Had to leave the internet on so they could try and get in and pages after pages of rudey men and women kept popping up.
one of the phonecalls I had was linked to a lady in america who works for them and she said she couldnt remember the last time a home computer was so badly affected!! not bragging about viruses here, but that was bloomin scary for me, ya mind starts racing as to what they may have got hold of and all sorts!

23 Oct, 2009
thanks mookins, just what i needed.
23 Oct, 2009
Half price at tescos if you have one close by!! yum yum and pringles are BOGOF (not being rude)
i should work there hehe

I do know that the porn industry is the one that's triggered major advances in computer software, and that a lot of viruses are attached to various porn sites (this from my two lads, both in the computer industry), so once it gets a hold, difficult to shift, usually groundbreaking stuff with the anti virus companies playing catch up.
23 Oct, 2009
Mmmm... cant say we look at porn to get the virus...but thats all that kept coming through... that and Viagra!
23 Oct, 2009
that's why I'm concerned - if you don't ever log on to porn sites, I thought it wasn't possible to pick up this kind of thing, but apparently, it is. Very unpleasant
23 Oct, 2009
You can get a virus from clicking on a link in an Email. More serious but not as offensive are the data miners that sit on your hard drive and monitor every single keystroke and use this info to get your pass words for things like your bank accounts, credit cards and all so they can send this info automatically to a server which will spit out your details to the owners who then steal your ID. They no longer target the wealthy but everyday Joe's like us! Like I said, I don't even do online banking any more! ! !
23 Oct, 2009
When I had my Internet probelm earlier this week, my IT matey told me to get a router instead of a modem. This thing will only let in addresses that you've typed, and nothing else that may be attached to them.....apparently! We'll just have to wait and see!
24 Oct, 2009
Never heard that Merf.....I still think it depends on your Security Prog. and how up to date it is ...and you are as a result.
24 Oct, 2009
I use AVG Free but check for updates AND run the program EVERY day without fail. It's the only way to stay safe. I run it last thing at night when I go to bed and set it to switch my PC off when it's finished!
There are plenty of other free software packages out there that you can use but get someone 'in the know' to download them for you as this is the time that you are most likely to catch a virus. (by downloading from the wrong site! ! !)
If I was using a pc for the first time, I wouldn't even connect to the 'net until I had installed the basics and then the first site I would go to is AVG.
24 Oct, 2009
That is a very good free security package Ian....and very sound advice. I have always been with Norton and indeed when I got my new laptop last year - it came with a 3 year free Norton Security package which they extended to my other laptop too...free of charge. An offer I could not refuse...LOL especially as it does all the checking behind the scenes and I don't need to DO anything ..which is great. However I do also use "Crapcleaner" (yes - I know - but that IS its name !!!) and it is fantastic ...and free...and does a fast tidy up before I go off line each night too.
24 Oct, 2009
I'll have to have a look at that one Alz. I have 'Advanced system care' from IO bit that does spyware removal, registry fixes, privacy sweeps and junk file removals. PLUS system optimization, security defence checks, defragmentation and security analyzer automatically. When I've looked into it I seem to be over protected (if that is possible?) Lol
24 Oct, 2009
I once got told the same Ian....I was spending hours a week doing scans and back-ups....what a waste of time I was THEN told.....so now just let Norton do the lot...worth every penny....at my time in life you don't even buy green bananas - much less waste hours doing flamin' scans!!! LOL LOL
24 Oct, 2009
LMSS Alz, don't buy green bananas. That is soooo funny Lol
24 Oct, 2009
I had an old neighbour who died a few years ago at the ripe old age of 106.....that was one of her sayings which used to have me in stitches too!!!
Her mantra when asked at the millennium what her recipe was for her old age...."A plate of porridge for breakfast and a sense of humour for the rest of the day" Nowt much wrong with that I say!!
24 Oct, 2009
Lol, the old ones are definately the best. It certainly put my stress levels at an ebb having a good sense of humour.
Yesterday (for example) the 'scrap man' was collecting on our street and I had put some things out for him, (old fan, some cables and other bits) and when he pulled past our car he ripped the wing mirror off with something that had fallen loose. He was almost hysterical, screaming abuse at the young lad up on the back of the wagon, so I offered him a coffee while we sorted out the nescesseries and he stopped looking so purple and accepted that SH** happens.
He has been to the Citroen dealers and ordered a replacement and nobody needs to get the vampires (insurence co.) involved. :~))
24 Oct, 2009
That sounds like a good deed well done, Ian.
I agree too....keep those greedy sods out if you can.
B unfortunate though....I bet you muttered a bit under your breath too but as that old lady of mine would also have said "smiled from the teeth forwards" !!!
24 Oct, 2009
No I didn't Alz, thats the point! The mirror is broken why jump up and down about it? Have a brew and sort it out, no problems!
I suffered terribly earlier this year because of stress so now I just don't do it, ever!
24 Oct, 2009
Good on you, Ian....I learned it too....but rather too late on in life I think. Now I am on my own - there is nobody to fight with but "Me Myself and I".....LOL
24 Oct, 2009
Lol :~))
24 Oct, 2009
Good approach, Ian, focus on the solutions, not the fact there's a problem, much, much easier.
24 Oct, 2009
Thanks Bamboo, after what I went through this year I have no intentions of going anywhere near stress again. I wasn't always like this but life has a way of teaching you whats important and whats just SH**
