The Garden Community for Garden Lovers

2015 A new year, a new start.

For the last two years, I have been volunteering for two day’s a week at a nature reserve. I needed to get out of the house and this has proved to be my ‘therapy’.

Now I need to rekindle my love affair with the garden. The poor thing must feel abandoned . . . and is certainly showing it. I have lost some plants and others will need some serious TLC.
In late August I decided to bring some of that Nature Reserve feeling into my garden. I dug up some of the lawn and have sown a ‘Meadow Mixture for Sandy Soils’. This consists of 17 varieties of wildflowers and 7 of grasses.

I’ve a feeling this will be a good year and I’m looking forward to catching up with my GOY friends and making new ones too.

Mark

I love the shapes you have created there, MW, and will look forward to seeing your nature reserve lawn as it develops. Sounds like you have been keeping busy and enjoying your work on the reserve too :)

Thanks Gill - the plan is to walk along that central grass path and have a Cadbury's Flake moment, running my hands through the grasses and wildflowers! :-)

I love wild flowers, what a nice idea I will look forward to seeing it later in the year. I would like to do something like this at the bottom of my garden over the wire fence. It isn't my land and runs along a foot path that is normally full of weeds and nettles. We do keep the nettles cut down to stop the walkers from getting stung, so I wonder if it would be OK to put some meadow seed in?

I'd go for it Teds - sounds like a great idea!

I like the idea of the chocolate flake as much as I like the idea of the wild flowers :) What better combination could there be?

It will be nice to see the flowers that come up Muddy. Will you still be doing any work with the nature reserve? I quite miss the one near where we last lived, where I used to help with the childrens group.
Teds you could try comfrey among your nettles, its thug enough to stand up to them. Let me know if you'd like a bit.

It must have been interesting to work at the nature reserve.
But it's nice to work in your own garden too.
I think your wild flower meadow sounds lovely.

Yes please Steragram, would love to try some comfrey thank you :-)

Hi Steragram and Hywel,
I'll still be doing my two day stint at the nature reserve, but will be getting stuck in to my garden too - there are some changes I want to make.
A garden is an ever evolving thing isn't it as new ideas come into your head and I've got a good few from GOY members over the years!

Thanks Carole, it feels good to be back. I shall post pics as it develops and hopefully attracts wildlife.
