New Year, New Look Garden

I am a new member and I would like to blog the redesign of my garden. It is a small garden and I am thinking of quite a few changes. I would like to reduce the amount of grass and reshape the borders. There is a vegetable patch in front of the shed which I would like to move. Also a path would be good because when it is too wet I am unable to walk down to the shed. To start the project, I bought 5 shrubs to plant in the borders. They are small so they will take a while to establish. I am also looking to hide the fencing which will require plants with height. I will be posting photos soon until then any ideas will be greatly received.

Hi, Welcome to GOY

I like your idea of reducing the ammount of grass. I think it will be great for you to have more plants.
I'm looking forward to seeing your photos and how your garden develops.

Welcome to GOY and a Happy New Year.
Curves make gardens seem bigger, and screening off some of it so you can't see it all at once seems to provide intrigue and surprise and can make it seem much larger. We have a third of an acre but visitors think it is one acre because they keep finding things that weren't obvious!

Hello Katie, you may be fitter than me but please be careful digging out an old lawn, I managed to injure my back last autumn just digging out 8 sq m area. I am now on light duties and spending a fortune on bibs and bobs for my back :-(

Hello Ams - Sorry to hear that you are only on light duties. Hopefully you will improve for Spring. Thank you for the advice on backs.

Hello Tanyamaria - My garden is east facing and it gets plenty of sun towards the back where the vegetable patch is currently. I will have to check what shrubs I bought.

The shrubs I bought were a caenothus, euonymus, euphorbia and 2 hebes. Hopefully they will fill some gaps in the border.

Hi Novice. Welcome to GOY and Happy New Year. Can't wait to see your progress.
I am trying to create a garden in the very back of our backyard. It used to be a HUGE vegetable patch which I didn't have the time or the inclination to look after. We grassed half of it in the fall and this spring I'm going to create some beds (I hope). I have no idea what I'm doing so it will be interesting to say the least. LOL.
We will be able to compare notes..... :o)

Happy New Year, and welcome to GOY (as we call it, affectionately).
It is exciting to see/have a garden that needs a whole revamp. I love growing veggies, and am a great fan of reducing grass to make way for more plants! We moved home four months ago, and will have to do same. Get the pics up, blog your progress, and continue to ask questions freely, you'll get loads of advice and helpful hints.
Also, use the search and encyclopedia facilities, they are an amazing source of info!
Best Wishes for the coming season!
