Changing the fence panels

Hello everyone, just an update on what I have been up to in the garden this morning, the sun was shining and so thought I had better get on with things. I planned on taking up the rotting picot fence and put in place a post and rail fence to enable me to climb roses over it, got the bug for roses, nice bug to have I know. I hadn’t realised until I took out the picot fence how much light it was stopping from getting into the plants, quite amazing seeing the openess once it was out, well half way out. Still got half more to do, but think one lot of hammering and banging is enough for the old shoulders there is always tomorrow and I need some lunch and a well earned cuppa.

Half Picot fencing out

Now for the knocking in and sawing and hammering – ouch my arms hurt

It is getting there, nearly finished, decided to leave the other half for another day

Have re directed (sorry trained) the rose that was climbing up the archway and fastened it down with electrical ties, (very useful piece of equipment electrical ties) and all that is left is to tidy up the border and pull out the weeds. All done, tools away and off to lunch just need to go and shop for some more roses to climb up and over it now, but will leave the buying until I have completed the other half.

I am thinking of creams and yellow or lemon roses anyone with any rose ideas for climbing over the new fence would be appreciated don’t think they need to be really big climbers moderate heights will do am thinking possibly three one up each supporting post to mingle with each other, or is that a tad too many? Advice please, thanks in advance.

Hope so Annella you no ideas in that vein then? need to get lots of ideas to choose from think maybe will need about six roses in total, so all ideas welcome to enable me to choose.

Looking good Oliveoil. The DA rose catalogue has options for short climbers and you can choose from their colour ranges. It's hard to tell from here how much space there actually is, but if you think six then I'm sure six will be fine. Have a look at The Pilgrim, Graham Thomas, Crown Princess Margareta, Evelyn, Jude the Obscure, Teasing Georgia, St Alban. Not in the DA range, but one of my favourite new roses this year....Papi Delbard....gorgeous...pic of it in my garden page for you. The ones I have in the garden are the pilgrim, Graham Thomas and Papi Delbard. I've ordered a Crown Princess Margareta for the other side of my arch. Also, not in the DA catalogue, but the one I tried to get and they sent me the wrong rose.....Ginger Syllabub...a lovely pale peachy climber...I might try again to get it as it looks so lovely!

Looking good Oliveoil :)))

Coming along nicely, Oliveoil. Bet that cuppa was a most welcome reward after such bone-shaking work. I assume you are leaving just fence rails and having the roses form the barrier rather than your previous picket fence?

I used to think I'd live in a house with a white picket fence at the front, roses cascading round about, thatched roof and a whif of smoke rising out of the chimney.....haha. My impressions of England were just a little bit unrealistic! Oh and I'd have a wrap around porch too....doesn't really fit with a thatched roof somehow! lol

You've worked hard for today....half there....sorry but no suggestions for roses but looks as if Karen has been able to recommend quite a few. I'd go for scent every time though :)

I don't know about being Oliveoil, you must have muscles like Popeye!
It does look so much better though, especially when the roses are in and running, it looks such a lovely sunny gardening day, I envy you! I'd much rather be there giving you a hand than being stuck at work! I have a lovely rambler that I got about 4 Years ago, its a David Austin rose called AGLAIA
the scent is to die for really strong and its sort of an Apricot Yellow which fades to cream, double flower and it repeats aswell, Its one of my favourites, I think it might suit your new supports, keep going girl, looking really good x

I think you have a brilliant idea there. Maybe a patio rose would look nice - they don't get too tall. There's a nice white one called Francine Austin . I have it and the flowers are in clusters something like Dorothy Perkin but pinky-white. - just to give an idea :o)

Thank you Michaella,

Whistonlass we all have dreams of where we would like to live, mine is a thatched cottage with roses round it and a stream or brook babbling past the back garden.

Dido I have muscles and they are sore now. Will look at your rose in a little while thanks for that.Whereabouts do you work, it has been a lovely day shame you were in work, but think of the money you will have to spend on plants lol.

Thanks Hywell, pleased you like my idea, hope it looks ok when it is finished, think it will, looks a bit stark at the moment but will be better when there are roses climbing up it. Will look at Francine Austin, but I am not a white colour person in the garden, but will look anyway thanks for your input.

Thats why I have to work to pay for the plants, I MUST HAVE AND NEED!!! lol

all looks great Olive...

Thank you Elsiemay

Dido, You and me too but my pension has to cover the cost of the plants, there is a plus to that though, the OH cannot complain that I spend too much, LOL. Not that he would know, cos I never tell him LOL. Hope he doesn't read this, nah he cannot switch the computer on YET!! I don't think he can. Hope he hasn't had lessons.

See we knew Karen would have the answers, I'm a complete novice on roses and Clems but your daughter knows her stuff xx

12 Oct, 2010

Yes she certainly does - have been looking at roses this evening, some really nice ones, think I have made my choices - think maybe Golden Future, Aglaia(Dido's contribution), St Alban, Evelyn, The Pilgrim and Chris. Will make a final decision tomorrow, when I am not so tired, just in case I change my mind overnight. lol

12 Oct, 2010

you certainly had a productive morning Oliveoil. Hope you manage to decide on your choice of roses. I made the final decision on the ones i want last weekend, and that was after 3 weeks of deliberation. And now i may be changing my mind again!! Hope you have more sticking power with your choices than i have - i just cant make decisions!!!

12 Oct, 2010

Tilly probably change my mind in the morning we will see lol

12 Oct, 2010

Chris is lovely.....how about a Rachel to intertwine with him! lol x

12 Oct, 2010

Tut tut, we will have none of that, are they still all mushy then? Isn't young love great! Is there a rose called Rachel, bet there is somewhere, getting very tired now, busy helping sam prepare for school lessons on Thursday, my eyes are failing fast now. Computer has been playing up and printer wouldn't work, so we are still at it. Nearly done now.

How you feeling this morning? Hope the aches and pains are not too bad, I sympathise with you, I'm only just getting there after last weekend, shifting IVY
my own fault, left it too long, but underneath that was a boatload of lovely stone that was left over from when OH built a retaining wall that I had forgotton about, so that had to be shifted too, not good on the old bones, but I'm looking now onto a bare peice of ground and not sure what to do with it, but thats the best bit for me, just like you choosing your roses.. pleased your considering Aglaia don't think you'll be disappointed.

13 Oct, 2010

Muscles not too sore Dido, quite surprised really, thought I would be much stiffer this morning, must be fitter than I thought. loved Aglaia thank you very much for your help. Hope you find what your are looking for for your bare patch. Is there a wall at the back of the bare patch to grow things up and along? If you have then look at Taylorsclematis website they have dozens and dozens of beautiful clematis for different places, one of my best ones this year to flower profusely has been Ernest Markham, it was a fantastic display and only new last year. Good Luck with the search - Barbara

13 Oct, 2010

Glad you're ok, will you be doing any more today? Weather not too bad here.. I've just taken a look at the clematis EM it looks stunning but the site I have is in quite deep shade, hence the ivy idea ages ago, but yes I do have a wall to cover.. I think I might have just the place for the clem you suggest though the colour is lovely and if it produces lots of flower even better.. I'll take a look at the Taylors site..Thanks Di

Have a look at;
http://www.classicroses.co.uk/products/roses/rachels-delight/
http://www.apuldramroses.co.uk/RACHEL+Tangust-rose.htm

I like Rachel's delight more, but I haven't got either of them, or Chris! I don't want to put a 'jinx' on them!! I don't like the idea of having plants named after them and the plant dying!! silly me....just don't fancy the idea of that...it would make me feel uncomfortable.....I still have my Noble Anthony and it has been stunning this year, I've really loved it. Glad I moved it out of the wet area where it was struggling so badly.

Not feeling too well today.....dizzy and nauseous all of a sudden on the way home from Dundee in my car (had lunch with a friend). Probably overtired, been exercising a lot lately. Taking it easy for the rest of the day! x

13 Oct, 2010

Karen....try and slow down and hope it's not long til you feel your old self again. Not nice to feel unwell...we've been like that here for a few days too....germs are rearing their ugly head I guess. So have to tell them to get lost!!!! preferrably in some weed patch (no, not mine, I hasten to add!).

There are so many gorgeous roses (especially the ones with scent) and it does make it difficult to decide. That's the fun of it. lol

13 Oct, 2010

I just can't WL!!!...decide I mean!! I need to get a (much, much) bigger garden in a much much warmer place!! ;)) thanks for your kindness....this usually happens when I am stressed out so I'm a bit baffled by it today!

13 Oct, 2010

Oh Karen.....dream on.....bigger garden, warmer place.....lol Blame it on the winter bugs...enjoy your rest....feet up and a cuppa (or stronger)...and I'll be hoping the sun makes it further north to you too. x

13 Oct, 2010

lol....thanks!! ;))

13 Oct, 2010

14 Oct, 2010

No, I didn't look any further, it's just too tempting! I'll go and have a look. I still haven't had a look at your choices yet....especially Dido's suggestion..off to do that now! Still feeling a bit under the weather so going to take it easy today again. Go out and take some pics of the garden at some point....oh yes, Aglaia is pretty.

14 Oct, 2010
