Ever since I saw this planter design, on the photo pages which Sticki put on a few weeks ago, I have wanted to have a go myself.
I could not find three square planters of the same material until this morning. I wanted straight sided ones but could not find three in various sizes. So I had to make do and this is how it turned out.
I really like it now I have it planted up – must have another search for some straight sided planters though, think it would look better if they were straight sided. Thanks for posting the picture Sticki it was inspirational. Hope you all like it, even though it is not exactly as pictured.

Its amazing - very successful. Tow questions if I'm not being cheeky - Is it stable, and how did you fix the pots together?

Thank you sticki - you posted the pictures which inspired me to have a go. Pleased you like it though thank you :O)

I like it very much!

Olive, you wee architect!
Did you get a Blue Peter badge for that construct? Lol.
Are there extra weights in the 'contact' corners?

Quite stable, lol at the moment Stera, each pot is just sat on the edge of the planter below and on top of compost and gravel. In the picture Sticki posted the planters were set inside each other so were more stable, but I am keeping fingers crossed and toes as well. I did wonder whether I should place a steel rod down each pots drainage hole, but eh ho we shall see what happens. I cannot resist an experiment. lol :O)

Mouldy it might fall down yet, think the award of a Blue Peter Badge might have to be withheld for the time being. lol :O) Only time will tell, as long as the wood surrounds the garden we are sheltered from the wind so it will not blow over (hopefully) lol I can just see it in the morning smashed to smitherines and my face being covered in egg!!!
No but you should know that - I am a woman weight is not my good point - and I am certainly not an achitect - so it could end up like the leaning tower of Pisa - ah well no worries. lol I am still chuckling :O) lol

I had a lot of trouble with rabbits jumping in the big pots and unearthing all the pretty bedding plants, well you know them sets, big, medium, small blue pots, I put the small on top of the compost of the big and put trailing plants in the small hanging down to the begonia in the big one, around the edge of the small pot
Worked brilliantly, rabbits couldn't do any damage and the planters are taller
I love your arrangement Olive, really stylish, and like Sticki I like the shape of the pots, it gives you more planting room too x

i like this a lot. :o)

Thanks Pamg and Seeaburngirl, I enjoyed myself playing in the garden today. lol. Just been out and it is still standing upright. lol :O)

I like this too, great choice of pots.
25 Apr, 2013
Thanks Drc but it wasn't a choice really only ones at the g.c. I could find with three varying sizes - I could not believe I couldn't find what I was looking for. I have been on line too and not found anything in my price range. Lots of expensive hand made pots but none that I can afford.

That'll look great, Olive, with plants trailing down in the summer.I did it years ago with round pots but this is definitely better(not so much wasted space) I think these pots are fine...they're nearly straight sided!!!!!!!
25 Apr, 2013
WOW!! Well done! :))))

I really like that arrangement Olive, it looks great, I thinking placing a rod through them would be a good idea, you would be so upset if they did topple, I might become a copycat as well, have just the right spot for an arrangement like that.....

You clever lady Olive I think the sloping sides not only make room for more planting but add to the overall design ~ I love it.
25 Apr, 2013
Thank you everyone, pleased you like it. :O) It is still standing and I have checked it out again tonight it is still very firm, only time will tell. The pots have quite a wide edge to them and they are heavy so think it will remain stable unless the soil in the pots sinks down a lot. I did push it down quite firmly and then put small gravel under each pot base to give them a firmer footing and bit more support. Watch this space will keep you updated as to whether or not it stays stable. Thanks again for looking in. :O)

Stylish to say the least. You will start a craze :)

Wow! That's brilliant!

They look good !

It is a striking piece and looks very attractive. It will be the source of many a converstaion in your garden and will be much admired.

It should be possible to plant up a Herb Tower with
various summer plants to create height in an attractive display. Mine with Herbs on the balcony tends to lean a bit, its important to press the compost down firmly level in the lower part of the Tower.
Yes, definitely will get another one to do this for added interest in the garden.

Thanks everyone, it is good to be able to report it is still standing upright this morning. I have had a giggle though, my husband, who is no gardener, hasn't even noticed it, I asked him if he had seen what I had been up to and he said no. lol How disappointing is that then. lol
I said I would not tell him he had to look, he came back in this morning and said ahhh the chiminea has been moved, I just tutted, he said is that not it? I said no! do you want a clue? - he said yep - I said where did the chiminea used to be - he said ahhhhhhhhhh those three planters, right under his nose. lol. what are some men like eh!!!! Think he needs to go to specsavers!

Similar idea to my Tipsy pots but Olive I so love yours much better.
Its fantastic.
26 Apr, 2013
thanks Scotkat I was also going to do some tipsy pots but never got around to doing them yet. I will though one day. I love things which are different from the norm. It makes gardening so much more interesting when you find ideas like these. thanks again for looking in. Hope you are still enjoying yourself up in Glamis with Karen.

I always say some men have 'Nut and bolt' brains.
If something is not mathematics it doesnt register.
Oh well we need people to build aeroplanes etc so
shouldnt condemn them.
Makes us appreciate the enthusiastic gentlemen gardeners on Goy.

That is striking, Barbara. I love that sort of thing - it really adds interest. I think the way the planters are set is very attractive. I might well become a copy-cat myself! (Well - I already am. How could one resist all the inspirational ideas on GoY?)
28 Apr, 2013
Diane it certainly does make you appreciate the gentlemen gardeners on here, it is good to get a male perspective on gardening. :o)
Melchi - I could not resist after seeing Stickis pictures of the roof top garden and tiered planters, it certainly inspired me. lol. I am still on the look out for straight sided planters though. I am not convinced that it would not look better. I know everyone likes it as it is, and of course I do, but I still have the vision of it being square and not sloping. I did find some straight sided planters the other day but they had a pattern on the outer edges and I wanted plain. I will keep searching as this little area will take another tiered planter. Thanks for looking in. :O)

It's good when one has a vision - I am sure you'll find what you're looking for eventually.

That's brilliant Olive. I really like the sloping side pots it adds to the effect :o)

oh wow oliveoil thats loads better than the one i saw ~ it looks really lovely. i think the slope on the sides of the pot make it better ~ it gives more room for the plants to climb over.
thanks for putting these pictues on.
