Well Dressing in Derbyshire

We have had a weekend break away in Nottingham & Derbyshire & did a few trips to the various villages. Dreadful weather so didn’t get many photo’s, but did manage these ones below in the pouring rain.
Villages in Derbyshire have the tradition of Dressing their wells with these wonderful collages.
These photo’s are in the plague village of Eyam. In 1665 the first victim of the village died & thereafter only 40 people survived. The village isolated itself from the rest of the country & no one was allowed to enter or leave the village. There are cottages with plaques in the garden listing the numbers of their family who died.
The picture is made up of flower petals & seeds pressed into a moist clay.
This shows a little closer some of the petals & seeds. A lot of Hydrangea petals are used. This particular one is to commemorate a 100 years of the girl guides & was put together by 5 & 6 year olds.

I discovered well dressing a few years ago when I had a friend visiting from Canada. I'd never heard of them before then. We found too that there were some flower festivals in local parish churches and even stumbled upon some morris dancers. Too bad the weather didn't co-operate for you Pam...you'll need to return another year and pray for sunshine :)
It must take them a long time and take a lot of concentration to create these beautiful dressings. Impressed with the one produced by the young children.
