New to gardening

T minus 16 days.
I’ve never owned a garden before, well not one I had control over. That is I will have no landlord fussing over my plans. Well in 16 days that all changes!
It is a mature garden which has obviously been loved and tended well. I can only hope I don’t mess it up! Thre are small changes I want to make but just small tweaks as I learn. My main excitement for this year is preparing the 2 veg plots and making a herb garden.
It will feel like a long wait for the spring planting.

Thank you both. The bare soil to the left in front of the top lawn is full of bulbs - it will be exciting waiting to see what comes up. I know there are daffs.

Welcome from me to. What a tidy garden you have. who ever lived there before looked after it well. Now it is YOUR garden and you need to put your own stamp on it. My advise would be to wait a year before digging too much to see what comes up. Veggies and herbs sound good to me. Happy gardening

May I make a suggestion, for the first year just sit back and record what flowers and when and then plan some changes. I hope you really enjoy your new garden and get as much pleasure as we all do out of ours.

It is very hard to be patient when you have been waiting for about 20 years to have your own patch of ground to grow and create from. But you are all correct, wait, monitor, enjoy!
My first list of actions for maintenance ~ hedges, weeding, dead heading, pruning summer rasperries & strawberries, turn the compost and now feeding the lawn, thanks Keithbob :-)
Then the only changes I am making is to remove the phormiums, remove some older strawberry plants, buy a gooseberry bush, prepare and plan the 2 veggy patches, make a herb garden (in the Phormium plot) and get some containers ready for spuds and carrots. Oh and choose a wee glasshouse - though I may start with a plastic tent type one.
Before I can do some of that I need to watch the garden and understand where the sunshine hits - it is south facing so I am very lucky.
Any pointers tips and advice is always welcome - in fact more than welcome!!!
I just hope I don't annoy with the dozen "can you help identify" questions I'll have over the next year.

Welcome to Goy.It is a very exciting time for you. Are you planning having a raised herb garden where you remove the phormiums because it looks as if they were planted as a sort of edging to a raised patio. There will be a drop off edge if you remove that hedge of phormiums. There looks to be quite a slope on your lawn too, do be careful when you are cutting it. Grass can be quite slippy. The former owner made a great job of everything and that gives you a head start. Kfunsters advice to enjoy and record this year is good advice. We don't mind how many questions you ask, somebody is usually able to provide an answer. Adding all your photos to 'your garden' will also put them up on the photo page of your site and is a great way of remembering what happened when. We will enjoy your year with you if you want us to.

Hi Scotsgran - thank you for the welcome. The garden is terraced and it has a decorative brickwall the other side of the phormiums. There is a path with steps running down the far side. I need to assess the wall's stability before I start clearing. But I think access will be fine, but yes I'm not going to venture on wet glass in the dark after a glass of vino! I'd crush my rasperries ;-)
It was the garden that sold the house to me. Each season will be a discovery!
