I think I’ve almost made the decision to try to make a go of gardening as a career. It’s amazing how many bits of work I’ve stumbled across at various friends’ gardens in the last few weeks. Only pocket money stuff, really, but every little helps. One decision I’ve definitely taken is to study for RHS qualifications – I’m a keen gardener, but I feel I need more training.
In the garden, the daffodils are making a real show in the borders. I’ve added a few photos this time. Of course, it’s also a cheering sight to drive past other gardens and verges laden with yellow trumpets.
Back in the conservatory, the chillies and celeriac are yet to show, the broad beans and sweetcorn are coming on well, but the real stars of the show are the peas. I love the tendril-laden early shoots of these vegetables. I understand that the shoots are a fashionable delicacy at the moment, but I think I’ll resist the temptation and enjoy freshly podded peas in a few months’ time.
I mentioned the self-seeding lupins last time, but the prettiest things are often the tiniest. Violets are popping up in all the borders now, and (after various contortions to get low enough with the camera), I grabbed this shot this morning:
Incidentally, alpaca poo made an appearance on Gardeners’ Question Time (GQT) this week. The panellists didn’t have any specific advice, but I’m going to give it a go: there are heaps of the stuff at the place I’m currently working. Shame to let it go to waste.
And finally, a bargain. If you have a Scats garden store nearby, they are currently selling a huge ’landscaper’s bag’ for £6.25 (about a third of the normal price). If you have a sizeable garden which produces barrowloads of leaves etc, I’d recommend getting one: I’ve found that these take the equivalent of about 5 barrows of litter, and the rubbish doesn’t blow around as you transport it to the compost heap. Saves hours! I’m probably preaching to the converted, but hopefully this will help someone.

Horticulture is a tough industry to be part of, but you obviously have the drive and determination not to 'let the grass grow under your feet' (no pun intended really!) . As you have found there is work out there for enterprising people who are prepared to go out and find it, and working for yourself can be very rewarding.

Good luck with the change, Peet. I considered the RHS courses a few years ago but the day job got in the way. In a way I wish I had taken it, for personal interest. I like the way you have pictured the daffodils with the light from behind.

Good luck from me as well - and I'm VERY impressed with the photo of the violets! I must have taken about 10 of my white ones - and had to delete the lot! :-(

Good luck, wish I had taken that path......the garden one of course!! especially as the only language I liked was latin!
I too thought the photograhs were stunning, looking to buy camera instead of using mobile.

Hi Peet,
Good luck if you do decide to make horticulture your profession. You obviously have a flair for it and a passion.
At least you will be outside enjoying all that the great British weather can throw at you, not sat in endless meetings listening to corporate nonsense.
