GoY Updates and Gardeners World Plant List 31st July 2009

Hi Folks,

Sorry for the delay with last week’s plant list. I made it just before this week’s show :o)

Before the plant list, we’ve added a few improvements which we hope you like this week. Some of you (those using Internet Explorer 8, if that means anything to you) will have had a small bug where deleting words from blogs etc… caused the text to jump around. We’ve fixed it on GoY but you might still notice it on other websites you use.

Secondly, we have improved replying to private messages. Remember how you used to open two windows and flick between them to remind yourself of the original message? Well no longer!! When you click ‘reply’ we’ll display the original on the same screen :o)

Thanks to everyone who has given us feedback on the issues they notice and improvements they’d like to see!

This week on Gardener’s World there was a visit to RHS Wisley in Hampshire (which I highly recommend). But if you’re visiting a garden in the area this weekend, just a reminder that AndrewR’s garden is opening for The NGS, a gardening charity, this Sunday (9th Aug). Good luck for the open day Andrew!!

On with the show…

Toby started by adding plants to his pond at Greenacre:
Nymphaea ‘Hermione’ (Water lily)
Ceratophyllum demersum (Hornwort) – an oxygenator for the pond
Cyperus involucratus (Umbrella plant) – a marginal for structure

Then it was off to RHS Wisley to look at their water lilies which included:
Nymphaea ‘Froebelli’

Alys was planting her oriental veg:
Pak choi ‘Green Revolution’
Tatsoi
Mizuna ‘purple’

Then Toby was back in the tropical garden and went through some of his favourite plants from South America before a trip back to Wisley:
Salvia microphylla ‘Cerro Potoso’
Tithonia rotundifolia ‘Torch’ (Mexican sunflower)
Dahlia ‘Vuurvogel’
Tigridia pavonia (Tiger flower)

The glasshouse was featured at Wisley (it really is impressive and well worth a visit).
In the temperate area:
Fuchsia ‘Tom West’
Fuchsia ‘Chelsea Louise’
Fuchsia ‘Gartenmeister Bonstedt’
Plectranthus ciliatus ‘Easy Gold’ (Indian borage)
Strobilanthes dyerianus (Persian shield)

Then it was off to the drier area of the glasshouse for some succulents:
Aeonium ‘Zwartkop’
Echeveria ‘Afterglow’

The beneficiaries of Joe Swift’s re-design this week got climbers for their arch way:
Humulus lupulus ‘Aureus’ (Goldenhop)
Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’ (Purple-leaved grapevine)
Clematis florida var. flore-pleno

And finally a trip to RHS Rosemoor for a feature on bamboo before back to Greenacre. The featured bamboos were:
Fargesia murieliae ‘Simba’ (Umbrella bamboo) – relatively small and graceful
Phyllostachys aureosulcata f. spectabilis (Showy yellow groove bamboo)
Phyllostachys nigra (Black bamboo)
Phyllostachys bambusoides ‘Holochrysa’ (Allgold bamboo)

Certain types of bamboo were recommended for different effects:
Phyllostachys – for beautiful canes
Chusquea – For an evergreen screen
Indocalamus – For lush jungly foliage
Fargesia – For quick ground cover

Right at the end of the show toby planted a plant they got at their plant swap:
Tetrapanax papyrifer ‘Rex’ (Rice-paper plant)

Thanks Peter, the improvement to the PM system is very helpful!

Is it my imagination or has Joe Swift re-designed his allotment and got rid of all those silly triangles......?

I only noticed the patch in Joe's allotment that he was sowing green manure on. He made quite a fuss about it at the start to go and change it now, will have to check next time.

It's just that it all seems to be rectangles now, when it was all triangles in the beginning?! I want to try the green manure thing but can't seem to get the seed - did you happen to make a note of the seed mix he was using?

The PM reply is much improved with the original message now visible when you reply.

Could you possibly tweak the website so that last posted messages are visible at the top of the page instead of at the bottom? For many pages it's not important but there are some with 100s of replies that take a while to load with many photos & then scrolling down to the bottom of the page is so bothersome.

What about the possibility of adding a few emoticons that we could click on to insert them into our posts? A lot of us use the keyboard for them but a couple of characters don't do justice to a round yellow smiley!

Glad you like the improved PMs :o)

We've had a few requests for smileys and it's on the list of things to consider but we have no immediate plans to add them.

Thanks also for feedback on screens with lots of comments, I think that's something we'll need to look at and I've added it to our list.

Would you mind sending us any other feedback using the 'contact us' screen (link at the bottom of every page). It makes it easier for us to manage the requests :o)
