Pond after - July '09

After: The is how the pond looks more recently. I've also included a pic of how it looked before. I'm using grasses (Hakonechloa) primarily, mixed with a few hostas at the back and then amidst the grass I'm gradually added dots of white and pink.

Thanks very much Fractal. I see you like Hakonechloa Macra Aureola too. Mine are only a year old but, like you say, they're getting better and better with age.

Very pretty all of it.

This is looking great now Nickya, I think grass type plants look lovely around water. One I used is carex elata aurea (bowles golden sedge) it needs not to dry out looks good all year. I also stupidly used carex pendula as I loved the pictures of it. My pond is small and I've got it all over now :-(

I love Bowles golden sedge too. Am going to stick 3 more beneath the burgundy Acer to set the colours off even more. I've also just ordered some other grasses to go in another border. Long and fluffy - can't remember their names just now but will update you of their progress. Incidentally Bornagain, a Welsh Poppy decided to come and live in my lavender borders at the front of the house. I thought it looked so beautiful I'm about to sow a whole load of them. Or am I too late for sowing?

No. Nickya, mine sew themselves all through the year I also just scatter some to take their chances whenever I feel like:-)

I also have acorus ogon which is a lovely colour and evergreen too, it does spread but not outrageously. :-)

Wonderful textures.

What is the plant in the middle there, with the rounded leaves? Is that growing in the pond water? I have a very similar plant that I love in my courtyard, but I don't know it is.

Looks like bergenia Noeticblues, but I may be corrected:-)

It's a water lilly of some sort (beautiful bulbous white flowers) gone a bit crazy through the ugly metal grid that's in place to stop the kids falling in. I was going to scale it down last year as its rootball is humungous. Can't bring myself to do it as it's heaving with wild life and the frogs love it.

Ooops, my eyes, and its in the water isn't it:-)))

What is that beautiful large wine colored plant on the left side towards the back of the pond. Love the color of the leaves. Looks like it will grow in the shade. Is that right?

Thanks Valerie2, it's an Acer. It likes a partially shady site. Too much sun (i.e when we heavily pruned the apple tree next to it) scorches its leaves.
