These woodpeckers are not shy. They love sunflower seeds and suet and will come to the feeders with you sitting near by.

This red breasted woodpecker variety is very tame. They come to the bird feeders and will come very close to where you are sitting. Our log cabin is 3 stories high and on a hill so our front porch overlooking the lake is right up in the branches of that oak tree and I get all kinds of bird shots at a close range. I put my digital camera on automatic and it takes several shots at one time and I can pick the best one.

That is a good idea, does nt the clicks frighten the birds

No, the camera has an option to not click for anything which I use.
You can preset it on manual on a feeder and you do not have to focus again if you keep it there. Also, you can put it on automatic and it will take about 40 photo(s) non stop. You can then just keep what you like.
I did not use prefocus for this one; but I do for humming bird feeders.
