I`d just planted this new acer but it didn`t look it best in that location. I`ve since put a reed screen behind it I`m looking forward to seeing it in full leaf again next year.

I envy you - my acer seems to be on the wane - its lost its leaves early and I fear for its future.
Any tips re soil, shelter etc?

Rachelsmum - many Acers will be completely defoliated by now anyway, depends on the cultivar. Not really all that fussy as to soil, but can struggle on dry sandy ones. Many green and purple leaf forms including dissectums will take full sun as long as they are not dry at the roots. Variegated and translucent forms will require some protection, either dappled or afternoon shade.
