Hi Pipsqueak - thanks for the recent reply. Now I know how to answer some of the questions for others to see. Weed control fabric & a good 2" of bark (chippings or mulch) as long as they are chunky. We've never been bothered with slugs on our hostas at all - reckon the roughness of the bark helps.

HOW TO KEEP SLUGS OFF YOUR HOSTAS - a tip we heard of last year was to boil a couple of garlic cloves in 2 pints of water for 20mins. Bottle up (full strength) and store. When you go to use, dilute 1 tablespoon to a gallon of water & spray with a watering can. You only need to spray every 3 weeks.

Thanks for that tip CG will try it next year.
Misread the title as Hosta Island but it has led to me having a good idea for my own place :~))

Thanks Gwen - sorry I'm a bit late in getting to this. I like my hostas - we've got 5 different kinds / colours & the bees love them.

Like the idea of a Hosta Island. What are you using as mulch?
