Two blue spruces

Photo taken Friday 18th December 2009.
The blue spruce to the front is Picea pungens 'Blue Mist', the other one a bit further back is Picea pungens 'Rovelli's Monument'

They look very healthy. Do you have to spray them at all for aphids?

Richard, both trees have been in the ground for ten years, the 'Blue Mist' has never been sprayed, and as yet, not once had a problem with aphids or red spider. The 'Rovelli's Monument' has suffered on a couple of occasions, but nothing too serious.

Couldn't resist it Blue.....treated myself today...a very nice specimen of the Hoopsii...a real beauty too....:o))

Well done Jane, one of the best blues too, but will need the leader staking for a few years to get it to go in the right direction, you might also need to do a bit of selective pruning to achieve a decent shape, again in it's formative years, best done in mid April before new growth begins, and as previously mentioned you will need to be aware that these spruces are susceptible to red spider mite. Infestations will send the inner needles (not new growth) brown and in many cases defoliate the plant...hope all this doesn't put you off, but they are one of the harder conifers to grow really well. :o)

Thanks Blue for all your advice, that's good to know....will take great care of it, I have posted a pic. The next buy is a golden conifer to contrast....:o) X
