For JACQUE

Jac - I looked out of my kitchen window this morning and this is what I saw!!! What a great Christmas present! This is the first goldfinch I've seen in my garden for well over a year. Most of the niger seed has been scoffed by the bluetits, but I just bought some more today so it will be topped up soon. Hopefully, he'll tell his friends! Sorry this is such a poor photo - taken from quite a distance, but I was so thrilled I had to take a picture lol

~mine seem to prefer sunflower hearts Sid~I got this special mix of niger and some other thistle seed but they still prefer the hearts although both are available in feeders~I could stand and watch them for hours! I had about 18 in Feb/March/April but only about 4 now for quite a while~I too am hoping they return!

~I have a big wide metal feeder which has 4 big ports and a fairly wide tray on the bottom and this takes a couple of kilos of sunflower hearts( with the outer black shell removed)bought by the 25 kilo sack from Kennedy wild bird food~
~the Goldfinches, Greenfinches,Bluetits.and even the Nuthatches are totally happy with the sunflower hearts although the Godfinches will also go on the niger seed feeders sometimes!
Because of the tray which holds the spillage and stops some of the seed from falling and germinating, the Collared doves sometimes take over in a big flock and can be a bit of a nuisanceas they sit there eating everything in sight! but I have also put a round tray in the neck of a large pot and put suet pellets and mealie worms for the Robins(3!) and Blackbirds~it's quite busy at the moment!
I hope you find that now you have one, more will come as they seem to be in groups~ you can get the hearts in packets from Wilko~

Couldn't agree more Clarice!

Arlene - Thanks for the info. I think I could do with one of those trays you mention that catches the spillage as I think a lot gets wasted - the bluetits chuck the seed everywhere searching for the bits they like!! lol

Sid if you look at some of my photos you will see my feeders one big feeder as a cover on top and a bottom that catch most of the seeds then my doves eat the seed of the bottom tray.

~I have a really big tray from Haiths because as you say the mess means you get millions of seedlings!the collared doves pick up the spillage quite well though and even the squirrels!

Thanks both - I will look at your pictures Clarice. Arlene - the ground feeders like the blackbirds seem to appreciate the bits that fall down, but I think a tray would be even better as less would get lost in the grass. My feeders are hanging in a tree over the grass, so any seedlings that spring up get mowed, which is a happy accident lol
