The giant lily, syn. Lilium giganteum the bulbs take 6-7 years to flower from seed. These plants are over six feet tall.

Many thanks to you all for your interest, and yes Simbad you are correct these lilies in common with most of the genus do prefer light shade as their natural habitat is on the edge of woodland.
