OH WOW! That is something that I have not tried yet!
African violets are SO beautiful but I have heard that they are a tad hard to grow and care for. My Mom used to grow a few under special "grow lights" when I was young and I remember that she put a lot of work into the plants..

What kind of growing medium and lighting conditions do they like?
What a cool plant!

They like an "open" medium....multi purpose mixed with silver sand and/or vermiculite or perlite......they need good light but don't like direct sun on the leaves....they will burn badly ..let them dry out almost to the point of wilting before watering......from the bottom....hope this helps..

I find them easy and trouble free as a rule. I agree with aa on position I have them on an east facing window sill but mine are in multipurpose compost.
thanks for the comments.

Thanks for the advice!
I think that I might want to try some! We have a south facing bay window that gets tons of indirect light. Might be a good spot.

they are easy to propagate too. you take a full leaf plus stalk. push the stalk all the way into the compost until the leaf blade is just touching the soil. keep warm and moist [usually put pot into a clear poly bag] and in about a month you have new plantlets. when big enough to handle, i leave them for a few months they can then be separated and potted up individually.

as long as its indirect light N2 then they should be fine. my south facing window gets to sunny and too hot sadly; as it is the biggest windowsill in the lounge.

Thanks for the great advice Seaburngirl!
I visited the local nursery today and they had a few specimens that looked pretty promising. We'll see what happens.. :-)

did you buy any then N2? Hope you did :o)

Of course! I cannot ever visit a nursery and return home "empty handed"!
{chuckle} That goes against any "plant junkie's religion"! I also picked up a ton of onion seeds to start germinating. This will be fun to play with!
