Amaryllis in bedroom window Close up 2010-03-28

This is one of my seed Amaryllis that has been growing on our bedroom windowsill. After 4 years it is at last flowering! The seed came from some I saved when I cross fertilized the 3 Amaryllis I bought back in 2001 at the 1st Continental Market held in Huntingdon.
This particular flower got trapped beneath the saucer of a pot above it. As I have so many plants & so little room I put the pots in tiers up to 3 rows high. I hadn't noticed it till I went to water them & I spied this one. The pressure from the stalk trying to grow caused the sheath to open & reveal the flower inside. I took this photo on March 28th.

I knew before I sowed the seeds that they would need about 4 years to reach flowering size. I knew I would have to be patient but that patience is about to be rewarded as most of the bulbs now have flower stems almost the height of the leaves! At least one bulb has TWO (2) stems & has never flowered before!

Last week I went around all the pots & put a number on each pot as I want to be able to track those I feel are of the best value. I'll do a blog on them after Easter once the flowers have started opening! I have some photos just waiting to go into a blog but they are only buds for the moment.
