Stand by for a silly question! Are those radish looking things fruits, Amy, and are they edible? Fascinating plant.

They are fruits Gee ... and are eaten in places like Mexico , Western United States , even Malta .... I don't think these would mature enought to eat in this country , they feel quite hard and have been on this plant since I bought it , apparently you have to peel them very carefully to take those tiny sharp spines off or they will stick in your throat ...
This is the first sign of anything happening since I have had it .. so it is exciting for me to see if it's going to be another leaf pad or a fruit !!

It's not Veg. Holly but it is fruit .. :o)

Prickly Pear Pear shaped fruit. We had a few of these on our cacti when we had them. I wondered if these were what the people ate Amy. Very interesting, the plant looks very alien like

No Amy when we moved home we decided to give our large collection away to someone who loved cacti. We really didn't have room for them let alone a greenhouse to keep them in. We've got a greenhouse now but only a small one.

I must admit i'm not that keen on cacti Lindak , I know they have beautiful flowers when they do flower but it's just something I can't get into ... I only have a couple !

I used to get the prickles in my fingers A LOT!!!! I tried to transfer them with a rolled up newspaper when I repotted but they usually had their revenge!!! I used to enjoy the flowers. We used to feed them end of March with tomato fertiliser (Weakened down with plenty of water.) I used to pluck off the flowers after they had shrivelled. I bought a few flat and wide dishes and made a few cacti gardens with small boulders and very fine stones on the top.

We get a lot of prickly pears over here, especially in Sicily - in fact I posted a few photos a while ago of how to eat the things without getting pricked to death !!! I wouldn't have thought you could get them to grow in a colder climate - they wouldn't be as sweet I suppose ...
