Green bottle fly

Not the usual green flies in the garden.....this little emerald beauty was sheltering on a hop leaf from the rain.

How did you manage this pic, fantastic.

Great photo though the id is incorrect. It's a Green bottle Fly (Lucilia) and the individual looks to be a male. It's the distance between the eyes that distinguishes male and females!

Calliphoridae, same family of flies as Bluebottles (Calliphora) and Flesh Flies (Sarcophaga). Along with Parasite Flies (Tachinidae) and House Flies (Muscidae) they belong to probably the most highly evolved of all flies.

Hi Janey, I am interested in all the natural world and have made a personal study of many groups of both plant and animal life.

I have an interest in the related family of flies called parasite flies (Tachinidae) as they have larvae that are endoparasites (live inside) of other insects (both adult and larvae) and also other arthropods such as woodlice, spiders, earthworms. None of these groups are immune from them though many species are quite rare.

They are completely unrelated to the Ichneumon wasps and Chalcid wasps that (mostly) have similar lifestyles, at least in their endoparasitic larvae.

Ooh...reading your comment Fractal....I am beginning to itch all over...parasite flies, just imagine....there are certain types of tropical flies that lay their eggs in the nostrils of humans aren't there? Certainly is scary San...especially for the host insect...:o( How do they hear Fractal?
