Oh Sand, it's lovely. It does look like it's well established. It's no wonder you love it so much. I would too. Very soothing to look and listen to water.:o))

Don't bet on it! We are having a 'debate' on the merits of the pond vs the algae; and also the site has been brought into question as it is probably too sunny! Have to get my thinking cap on for the area of lawn around the greenhouse part. I may take away some of the very large border and use part of that and part of the lawn......mmmmm....thinks.....

Just had an idea.....I could use sleepers again to make another octagon and join it to the greenhouse octagon and put the pond there......:))))

karen mine gets sun almost all day and is fine, no algae as yet but i have my filter on all day in summer, will only switch off in winter, also i have snails which eat everything in sight, its as clear as crisytal, think having lots of plants around helps to, gives a little shade through day ;o)) that octigon idea sounds good to karen

San, I don't know how you manage it. My old one had a UV filter, a pump AND lots of plants in it and around it, and it never made a bit of difference...green pond....yuck. I think that's why we're so unsure about doing it again. I think my old one was too small though, which doesn't help.

well as its my first karen i really dont know, this is 4ft all the way round and about 18inchs deepest part so not over big, ive got the same pump/filter as carol(clarice) its an easy clear and neither of us has any probs, also carol told me of a liquid to add which helps keep clear to which i used once, cant remember what its called, so touch wood its fine at the moment,

Thanks for that San, I will make a note...easy clear pump and liquid as well....yours is small too then. My old one was 5' long, about 31/2 wide and 2' deep in the middle....mmmm.....puzzling! Did you fill it with hose or rain water San?

See.....again.....you did the 'wrong' thing and got the 'right' result!! I think you just have a way with ponds San!! I notice that yours has really got some thriving plants in it, which must help.

maybe just luck karen, i got oxygenating plants x3, and others are just flowery plants, im sure the small snails help but i do have to watch they dont take over, breed for england lol, im going to release some in spring if they all survive winter, also im a bit worried about my fish but carol says her survived in same depth, time will tell

Hmmm....they are amazing those fish...they just seem to go into a coma. I recall when we had a really sick one with a terrible growth and I tried to euthanise it (is that a word?) by putting it in ice. Went away assuming it dead and came back and the blooming water had warmed up a bit and fish was thrashing around again. Really traumatic!! So....the point of this horror story was to say that I think they can survive a lot of cold!! Snails...that must be the thing...we don't get snails here....they don't like our soil. I shall get some water ones especially!

aww poor fish haha, but it shows they can survive karen, yes pond snail not common garden ones karen haha, i got the smaller ones as the guy said the fancy ones dont always survive, but if i get to many eggs laid i take the eggs out before they develope, i gave carol some snails and baz said i can always put some in the local ponds or where he works if ive to many,

Good idea San...now all this talk of snails has made me very hungry ...I'm off to cook the dinner......frogs' legs anyone? ;))

Your pond, as others have commented, looks so well established and natural. It must have been quite a lot of work getting it all just right. The stones and rocks around the perimeter of the pond really "make it" and not getting algae is a real plus.

I'll have to look further into your blog....it looks very interesting. The trouble is I'm looking at a lot of blogs/photos and it's all seeming a bit overwhelming for a beginner like me. I'm so impatient and want it done like yesterday! lol

Looking really nice now San,well established.
The liquid you put in to fight the weed and algae was probably Barley Straw concentrate,I have used it as well and Barley Straw bags.The bags are made of fine netting with the straw in about 12" long x a few inches across.Just place it in the pond,after awhile it will sink.The Barley Straw decays over time and releases an enzyme which the weed and algae does not like,one bag lasts about 3 months but takes a couple of weeks to start working.The liquid concentrate just works a lot quicker.

thankyou so much whistonlass, it was hard work i have to say as we had to clear the area first of old trees, but once that was done and the hole was made it was easy, well exept for not having a big enough liner first time round hahah,
but i so enjoyed doing the rocks and pebbles then the planting, probably to many plants but wanted a full and established look right away, so will thin them out next year, if you want to do a pond make it a winter project then its looking good for summer ;o))

thanx paul did it all myself apart from the digging which baz did and my sons dug out all the old trees, i have a marsh marigold in basket, also have iris, a couple of grasses and another which common name is orange peel plant which has lovely white flowers and the leaves smell of cytrus, in the pond i have water hyacinth which is annual but in this country unless we have a great summer it doesnt flower but the fish love to eat the roots and shades the pond cause its grows so fast, also i have water soldiers which sink to bottom in winter and float in summer, a water lily,then normal plants there after up the slope with rockery plants to drip over the stones to soften it all.

will add to favourites for future reference - the rocks and cobble mix is brill - you prob guessed I love my rocks :D
