They pay repeated visits to check out the nuts, then shower the area with shells. I think they like them when the nuts are moist rather than completely ripe.

Just like I do!! Just been out foraging we seem to have no squirrels for a 5 mile radius, thank goodness as hazelnuts are just the best when fresh!
