I love this combination. What is the wine colored plant behind the grass? Can this be grown in light shade?

Hi Valerie, that's a 'Crimson Queen' japanese maple. It will grow in light shade, but will be fuller if grown with at least 4 hours of sunlight.. I have one growing in almost full shade.
