This plant is listed by several names. It's a really common semi-shade to shade plant in Coastal California. Photo taken at Quail Botanical Gardens on Nov. 2, 2010.

reminds me a bit of the prayer plant.

It's in the same family (Marantaceae)...and like Prayer plants the leaves close up at night.
