4 Nov, 2010

4 Nov, 2010

Wow. no wonder you fell in love with it San.....it's stunning! Nice pot too. I've been looking at pots today....aren't they expensive.....I looked that much that I'd seen enough and didn't buy any Lol!
4 Nov, 2010
Aha! The lovely standard Holly is home!! Oh, it's lovely isn't it. I get confused with Hollies re. the sex, but mine have all got berries on this year. I think you may have to google it San! Pot is great and agree with Janey after buying all those terracotta ones for my evergreen area...they are expensive. Local Nursery definitely the best buys, and Dobbies not too bad for some ranges. B&Q and Homebase...no joy.
4 Nov, 2010
lol janey, i usually wait for pot sale but i really liked these and needed two for new standards, this one was £22 and other a wee bit smaller was £16, my holly was £39.99 so not to bad i thinks, baz fainted haha "not" he was ok really, glad you like the holly standrad though :o)))
4 Nov, 2010
thanx karen glad you like it to, there were bigger ones meaning bushier but over a hundred, a bit steep for me, i dont usually go for coloured pots but loved the subtle green and a nice change. where i got these pots they have great clearence sales for pots but these were new line, but made up karen :o)))
4 Nov, 2010
lovely I love holly - have a few dotted around - are you leaving in the pot or planting it in garden?
4 Nov, 2010
thanx paul, at the moment it stays in pot, but who knows with me and changing things lol, but love the pot to and will be in there a while yet. i have a shrub holly in border but no berries as yet. lovely plants arent they.
4 Nov, 2010
Now, you've got me thinking about that one I love in dobbies with the orange berries! It's not variegated, just plain green leaves and matte, not shiny. Quite unusual. But the orange berries really set it off a treat....oh no....I really can't justify the price though San....it's too expensive...how frustrating!!! :)))
4 Nov, 2010
Yes they are gorgeous things - at a garden centre near us there a loads averaging about £15 then there's one not as nice for £42 ????
4 Nov, 2010
lol doesnt take much to get you thinking karen haha, i now what you mean about prices though, i would see if i could get it anywhere else and if not decide if i could live without, then buy it hahah
paul you can get holly shrubs pretty cheap i agree but a standard of anything seems to shoot up the prices so how

looks a lovely tree Sandra and in a good position too. It stands out well in front of the white door ;-))
4 Nov, 2010
You are so right San...about standards. But then they must take years to grow mustn't they....so worth the money really.....and we have to keep the nurserymen in business ;))
4 Nov, 2010
thanx richard it does look nice in front of garage door but only there to shelter from all this wind and till i know where its going really, think i may sort out my patio area when a nice day , nice to see you and hope all is well with you richard :o)
all true karen lol, i dont mind keeping them in buisness :o))

You have a lovely tree there San .. you do need a male and female to have berries ... we have several Holly trees in our garden , big ones and would you believe we are always pulling up baby holly trees , the leaves fall over the flower beds and are so prickly to clear up , at least you won't have that problem with it being in a pot .. my hubby often threatens to cut them down but I won't let him ... !
4 Nov, 2010
thanx amy glad you like it, so is the female the one with berries or male, i have a shrub one in border but no berries but still love the leaves, but i may move that one so i can see it better, i dont blame you not wanting them cut down amy, lovely :o))
4 Nov, 2010
I do like your standard Holly and the pot compliments it too, smashing choice San... and reasonable too.
4 Nov, 2010
The female bears the berries San ,almost all Holly trees are uni-sexual ,and to obtain berries on a female plant a male also needs to be grown nearby ... The right type to pick depends on the role it will play in your garden . If you want a single specimen which will bear berries you must choose a self-fertile type which I believe your is .. ;o)
5 Nov, 2010
BTW ... there's a pic in my book of your ' Argentea Marginata ' 46ft tall ... LOL... you had better keep it trimmed .. ;o))
5 Nov, 2010
Very nice love the pot aswell.
5 Nov, 2010
It's a beauty Sandra and will soon grow into a £100 job. As for Hollies and sex .... Golden King is a female and Golden Queen and Silver Queen are both males ..... someone had a sense of humour ! :-)
5 Nov, 2010
thankyou dotty, glad you like it :o)
omg amy hahah hope this has been grafted :o)
thanx carol :o)
thanx muddy, and someone sure does have a sence of humour lol :o)
5 Nov, 2010
ps thanx for the info amy, its my other holly bush im not sure about, no berries and dont know what it is either, but even if it never gets berries i still love the leaves :o)
5 Nov, 2010
Spent your pocket money again Sandra. I'm sure it will grow to the size of the £100 one and you have pocketed the difference.
9 Nov, 2010

9 Nov, 2010

10 Nov, 2010
I wish I'd seen this before I bought my 'Golden King' today ... now I know it's female ... thought it was a male by the name! Grrr! Oh well, another one may just have to be purchased . . . . . : o ))
2 Jan, 2011
lol never mind shirley still lovely and you can buy another one, the one you want :o)
