There is lots of this green leafy growth on small fallen twigs and branches throughout the wood. I can't see it growing on any living tree. I'm not sure if it is a fungi or not. Any ideas?

What clever people you are. I have just googled Evernia prunastri and you are right, Amy, and it is a lichen, Hywel. It is quite pretty and a brighter green than my photo shows.

It's a lichen. They're a combination of a fungus and an alga growing together.
It does grow on the living trees. There are lots of different types. You can find them on rocks, gravestones, walls etc aswell.
I'm sure I have a photo of a gravestone with them on. I'll look for it to show you.
