Pileated Woodpecker on an aging Aspen

Pileated Woodpecker on an aging Aspen

Both the Aspen and the Hemlock very close behind it..are quite aged. The Hemlock probably enjoyed the shade of the Aspen as it grew...but the Hemlock is probably much older! The Aspen has started to die from wind damage, fungus and insects (probably) and the woodpecker is doing his part.

Thanks Milky, Bampy and Paul. His head moves so rapidly that getting it in focus is a bit of a challenge. lol.

Great photo Lori. Woody the woodpecker comes to mind. With the tapping on the wood, it's a wonder he doesn't get a headache LOL. Lovely to see the woodpeckers though, we see one on our walk around the block here and he's usually on the dead wood.

Thanks Grammazoo. lol... yes, I have gone from a backyard to a backwoods! I love it!
Thanks Lindak...I was so far away from him that it was difficult to tell in the dull light if I had the focus right...and he was hammering away...head going so fast that I got a couple of pictures of a blur! There are a pair of these birds as well as a little downy and a hairy! lol..such names aye? There is plenty of good habitat for them in my backwoods.

I've been looking through the photos and you have quite a task on your land. It looks just right for a pond off the stream. Are you going to plant some grasses at the edge Lori? The greenhouse looks good, you'll have to fit a deckchair in there to get some warmth to sit in and rest a while with a drink.

We are experiencing the worst spring I can remember, Lindak... The forecast for us tomorrow is for temps around the freezing point and snow! I've been trimming dead wood from trees and shrubs...and raking til my hands are blistered...the digging is just more of the same! will have to take a couple of pics of the mess so that I can have a point of comparison as the work progresses... I'm still dithering about where to put the greenhouse, it's been so cold and I don't want to work with the metal and polycarbonate at these temps...but I need to have it up soon...so I guess I'll be late, unless the weather decides to warm up suddenly. Then you can be sure I'll be finding a comfy spot in the ghouse! lol..
